Past society events

Picocon is a convention run by our counterpart society at Imperial College. It's a fun event filled with guest speakers, silly games and a quiz. This year the guests of honour are Cory Doctorow, Frances Hardinge, Ian McDonald, Kari Sperring and Stuart Ashen.

This week we're having another members' choice where you get to decide what we're watching. Just bring along your favourite film or TV show and we'll have a vote on the day. Please don't bring your entire movie collection with you as we don't want to spend the entire session voting.

Neo (Keanu Reeves) is a bored IT professional by day and by night a hacker. He feels that there is something not quite right with the world and spends his nights tracking down Morpheus, someone he believes can answer his questions. But the truth is far beyond what he could ever imagine and as he falls down the rabbit hole, he is forced to re-evaluate what is real and fantasy and above all, who he really is.

This film is about some children who find a magical board game which when they play it discover a man who has been trapped inside for several decades. The only way they can all escape the game is by completing it, but each turn introduces yet more terrible dangers threatening their lives at each stage.

This film probably needs no introductions as it's one of the most recent movies in the second phase of Marvel's cinematic Universe, but just in case you're not aware, it is about a ragtag group of criminals are forced to work together and put aside their differences in a bid to save the Universe.

We're gathering in Imagine for a small social with games and chatting. If you've got any games you'd like to play, bring them along.

Join us for our Christmas meal to be held at Prezzo which is at the bottom of Egham hill. A group of us will be meeting in the Arts building at 6:10 and then walking down together for those who don't know where they're going.

The dwarves, along with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey, continue their quest to reclaim Erebor, their homeland, from Smaug. Bilbo Baggins is in possession of a mysterious and magical ring.

Another chance for you, the members, to decide what we're going to watch this week.

This will be a trip to go and see the 3rd Hunger games movie in the local Vue Cinema. The plan is to go and see the 7.30pm showing.

This is the modern film remake of the classic TV show.

Hey guys! So this week we have our science fiction and fantasy themed quiz! The quiz will last for 5 rounds and will take about 2 hours, there will also be a variety of different prizes up for grabs including DVDs, food, drinks and memorabilia. This quiz will be free for all The Institute For Impure Science (IFIS) members, or £1 for any non members. So invite all your friends down! Team sizes will be dependant on the numbers we get on the night. We all be meeting in the arts building foyer at 7pm on tuesday 11th as normal; if there's time, we will also be going for our weekly social afterwards!

Buttercup finds true love with the farm boy Wesley, but he is killed by the Dread Pirate Roberts when he goes to seek his fortune. So instead she finds herself betrothed to the local Prince even though she does not love him and he plans to kill her to start a war. And so begins a fantastical tale full of pirates, giants, princesses, sword fighting, treachery, revenge, death and true love.

So on Tuesday at 7pm we will be having a special event. We will be playing board games with the guys from Gamesoc. Do IFIS proud by turning up and challenging the Gamesoc members to your favourite games. Come along, make new friends and pit your skills against some of the universities best board game players. We will initially meet in the arts building foyer before moving to our room of choice for the evening.

This Tuesday at 7pm we will be having a members choice night! Due to the administration problems we have been having, this will be a bit different than normal, please bring along a movie you wish to watch, we will then vote on which one we shall screen. We will still be having our weekly social in medicine afterwards

Serenity is a Joss Whedon film based on his much loved TV show Firefly. It's about the crew of the spaceship Serenity, a bunch of renegades and outlaws, who are just trying to earn a living and stay one step ahead of the law. But they find themselves being relentlessly pursued by the authorities when they take on board a young girl and her brother as passengers, as they will do anything to get her, and the secrets she contains, back.

So this tuesday we are going to be watching the Disney fantasy movie 'Frozen'. We'll be meeting once again in the Arts building foyer at 7pm.

This is the culmination of the first phase of Marvel's comic book movie franchise where the heroes Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Hulk team up to prevent Loki from taking over the world.

We will be hosting our first social of the year. After meeting in the Arts building foyer we will travel to Crosslands (the bar inside Founders) for drinks and Science Fiction/Fantasy themed discussion.
