A secret US navy research project brings together a group of men and women possessed of telepathic powers. In the course of the experiment, they make contact with the alien Tyrenni, beings resembling winged squids and dwelling in the upper atmosphere of a tempestuous world.
The Tyrenni world is under threat from a huge and evil being - the Destroyer - moving inexorably toward them and obliterating whole star systems in its path.
Confronted by certain extinction, the Tyrenni realise their only hope of survival is to take over the bodies of their human contacts...
