So, either the Pratchett contest has died a death, or for the first time in
history the first copy of the latest discworld was acquired in the public
library in New Haw :o)

Actually it's not !

OK the book is published earlier than I thought - start of October not
November. But this equals the record for an early sighting.

HOWEVER I do have to quote the competition rules here:

" where we can walk into a shop that has it in stock and buy a copy wins.
In stock is the operative phrase - pre-orders do not count!"

So I don't think the library having it counts either, but good try.

Contestants are also reminded that "Since the abolition of the net book
agreement bonus points are awarded for finding it cheap - any sub tenner
reports on the hardback are gratefully received....."

Oh defintitely. Especially when I couldn't find a copy at the Borders in
Swindon today.
You might get into trouble if the Library's copy went back with the author's
signature on it !

The rules don't actually specifically state that libraries don't count. So I

There is a long standing tradition of Terry Pratchett books appearing
waaaaay before their release date. They just do. I've bought some nearly
a month in advance of the official date. Honest. This has got a little
better in recent years since the stock has been embargoed till a certain
date.

This has lead to the mad Pratchett fans amongst us playing.......

It's a fun game as it involves going into lots of book shops.

5Oct 1999 etc etc etc ...... for the rules:

Regiment in WHS in Richmond for the first time. Was marked at 2 off.

Amazon are listing it as published Oct 1st. They're also saying
dispatched in 24 hours !

Sussex Stationers say this Saturday (25th), and 9.99

And they were as good as their word, and very good it is too.

My library seemed to have got it pre-release which is almost unheard of -
even with standing orders, we usually have to wait a few days after
publication.

But as one can't actually buy it from the library, at least not for a few
years yet, when it will probably be sold off as old stock, it doesn't count
for the competition, but does mean I've read it already :o)
