The problem is probably with RHBNC computer centre rather than the
IFIS
list.
Harrumph. The VMS based RHBNC computer system uses MultiNet as it's primary
IP stack. I can vouchsafe MultiNet as being a well designed and well
Nah - it's cos they're using Microsh*t software for mail now. Thankfully
the CS lot are still using Unix so they shouldn't have any problems. *8)
RHBNC are, indeed, using microshaft exchange for most student's mail
these days, and it's almost certainly MS's fault that mail is arriving
out of order.
I'm watching the mail queue most of the time here, and USUALLY when an
IFIS mail arrives, it's sorted and mailed out to all recipients within
a couple of minutes, and it's NEARLY ALWAYS in strict order.
Occasionally there are problems delivering, such as RHBNC's mail
server being down, in which case mails will remain on the queue here
for retrying later, and yes, the retries may then occur in a somewhat
strange order (for technical reasons which actually DO make sense).
On the whole though, we're delivering them in the same order they
arrive in, and any delays are microsoft's fault at your end.
Whilst I'm complaining about microsoft...
I couldn't help noticing the other day that Andy Palmer had a header
saying something like "Return-Receipt-To:
andyp@". Now, this feature was originally intended to
be for DEBUGGING purposes, not for using with every single mail, but
that's a different issue. The problem here is that several sites,
including rhbnc's microsoft exchange, decided to return a receipt
(almost forgivable) but to ME, as list owner, not to andrew (which is
NOT forgivable). I even had one site trying to send a receipt to
andrewp@, which NEVER existed ANYWHERE in the headers!
Bloody microsoft...
Anyway, I'm setting a bad example by not talking about sci-fi...
Should have just installed exchange on the alien spacecraft in ID4.
