Right! Now we're discussing how the human brain helps or hinders
pulling power! (Ugh, I hate that term!) But while we're on the
subject, surely it's more a case that those who are more intelligent
would, by and large, have spent much more time reading books than
getting exercise (and Sun and social contact for that matter), so, by
that token, the "physically strong" and "macho" men would most probably
be not all that bright, having been playing football (on both sides of
the Atlantic) all their lives...? Hence the stigma associated with
being clever - it's not that it's a disadvantage, it's that the
assertive people (assertive because they're good-looking) are largely a
bit stupid, and probably jealous! Or at least this was true once, and
now the stigma is just there by tradition!
Another point is that being clever is associated with liking Star Trek
et al., which the "jocks" don't really understand (or at least would not
admit to liking, for the above reasons). As I said before, why is it
that blokes who know everything about their own football team are never,
*ever* scorned as being "anoraks", but rather worshipped as gods of
Manhood? (Or, to put it another and more appropriate way, gigantic
penises! Sorry to any footie fans out there, but hey, face facts!)
However, there is hope! I believe it was Isaac Asimov or Arthur
C.Clarke (damned if I can remember which one) who wrote an article in
one of those big Star Trek behind-the-scenes books, and, apparently, his
daughter thinks that Mr.Spock is "dreamy" because "he's so smart"! That
was a blow for Mr.Clarke/Asimov (someone help me here!), because he had
grown up with the impression that girls always (and I mean *always*)
went for the slightly goofy football players! (Although probably not
often for men like Forrest Gump!) Maybe it's just a case of the jocks
getting out and meeting girls more, while the girls aren't so interested
in science because it's still such a male-dominated area. (I, for
example, don't know even one girl who's particularly interested in
science! If anyone knows a girl who is, however, would they please send
me her address...) That's a generalisation today, but it was certainly
true once. (At least, it was in my day, by gum...)
By the way, can anyone quote the line from Hitch-hiker's Guide about
humans and dolphins laughing at each other over war etc.? (Don't just
say "no"!)

P.S. I am a "nerd", you may have gathered, by the above criteria - I was
never very good at sport, preferring to do my classwork... although
you'd never guess from my exam results last year, ahem...
