You may say this is nothing personaly but it sure doesn't sound like it. I
don't take kindly to abuse when I'm actually trying to help.

You also haven't been to freshers fayre in a while as it is strictly
controlled by union officials where 2 people are allowed to represent the
society at one time with wrist bands to control comings and goings. Its not
as relaxed as it obviously used to be in the good old days.

I have actually been absent from pub as I have been at home all summer so
have only just arrived back. Also this is something I do for pleasure
something which isn't very enjoyable at the moment.

The back lash I have received from a few just makes me sad-if there were no
freshers there would be no committee without a committee no official
society.

You can pull the age card on me for sure but I'm the one who actually has to
deal with the union and go to the boring gms and council meetings.

This isn't about _consulting_ old members - it is about at least having

courtesy to _inform_ old members when something as entrenched in the

While they cannot OFFICIALLY run freshers fayre, it has happened many
times in
the past that they did in fact do so along with the at-the-time
students. I
know this from personal experience - I was there before - as an
ex-student.

And you aren't actually a signed up member yet so...

1) I have been a member of IFIS for considerably longer than you. But
that's
not really important.

2) Nobody has yet turned up to the pub on Thursday to take our money and
sign
us up this year. Seen as the Tuesday meet wasn't announced using any of
the
standard channels, this is starting to head down the slippery slope of
catch
22.

On a related note, I want to stress that I have nothing against you
personally, so please don't take my rant that way. I recognize that it
is
within your remit to do what you did, I just think it was rather unfair
(or
at least an honest oversight) to do so without openly disclosing it to
the
old members. Mentioning it at the pub the previous week or at least
sending
an email to the list telling us about it would have gone a long way
toward
avoiding the "hostility".

There is a difference in scope between criticising a person and some of their
specific actions.

This is obviously something they have become anal about within the past 2
years. I'm told they go through patches of such things.

BTW, good work for getting the film showings reinstated.

That is a rather sweeping statement. I accept your claim that your actions
were in order to maximize the number of new members. However, saying that
there would have been no new members without the re-scheduling (the only
issue there has been friction over, as far as I am aware) may be somewhat
overstated. Am I wrong there?

I didn't pull the _age_ card - I said that I have been a _member_ for longer.
Also note that I only did that because you pulled the current membership card
- which was somewhat logically incoherent, given the specifics of the

Yup. You need to brush up on your basic maths skills. Last year at the
first pub meeting we had about 5 students turn up. By the end of the year
we had 2 - and one of them isn't a student any more, so it might as well be
1.

This year at the first pub meet we had at least 15. Only 4 of which could
make the Thursday pub meet. Do you want to exclude the other 11 paid up
student members because you can't make Tuesday? That's very selfish.

But anyway, the numbers speak for themselves. 15 is 3 times the number we
got last year. And they're really eager too. I can see this being a really
good change.

Get real. I've joined and whilst I won't be able to attend Tuesday
meetings, I'm quite happy to support the society and take part in other
events where I can.

OK, I stand corrected on the numbers. That still doesn't justify the lack of
courtesy in not notifying people of the change and for the reasons for it. Or
do you not see that?

While you may have been kept in the loop (evident from you insight into the
situation and the message you forwarded for our benefit), from what I can
see, most of the rest of us had not been granted that advantage. If you
hadn't forwarded the message to the announce list, we wouldn't have had even
those 9 hours' notice.

I'm not sure I'm reading this right. Are you implying that you cannot see the
paradoxal ground for there even existing the argument of me not having signed
up _yet_ this year? I find it rather dissapointing that you are considering
this argument worthwhile of pursuing.

Maybe you could start by informing us here about who the treasurer is so we
can give them our membership fee.
