anyway.. enough of that
Completely shite plotline. But the special FX were absolutely
amazing :)
Yep, They didn't really bother to stick to the book they ?
Apparently
there was a Manga
done in the mid eighties which is much more similar to the book.
Anyone know what it
was called ? Could be a potential
IFIS video evening.
Hmm... I have no idea which on it might be. If there are any anime
experts around, please come forth...
I especially liked the way the bug picked up the cameraman at the
start
and checked him around :) Oh, and the two troopers melting in
front of the
screen, eyeballs falling out and all.
Lot's of fun gore, I was surprised it only got a 15 rating.
It was a good scene wasn't it. :)
It was also pretty good when that same big bug blows up. :)
A couple of nit-picks tho.
Having had their arses kicked on Klendathu, you'd think they'd
have learnt
their lesson, and just nuked any planet with bugs on. I mean, how
hard is
it to bomb a planet?
I thought that at first but I think the point is that there are
only a
limited number of
planets with a human (and Bug) breathable atmosphere. Therefore
they
wanted to
do as little damage as possible to these potential colony worlds.
However I would
have expected the use of armor and mechanized infantry with lots
of
air
support.
Ideally don't land any trooper, just hover about with gunships,
picking
off the bugs.
This was demonstrated in one of the scenes. There was a lot of bugs
(actually the place was crawling with them as far as the eye could
see), and then three or four fighter planes come out of nowhere,
raining napalm bobs at them and turning the bugs into one massive
barbecue! :)
It remains unclear why this was not used more often... especially
considering how uneffective the infantry guns were against the
bugs...
On klendathu, it took 4 or 5 troopers to just pin a bug down, and
3 or 4
died before the bug croaked it. Why didn't the troopers get
equipped with
better weaponry when they went to the second planet?
Mobile Infantry are the lowest of the low, if you notice the
downed
pilots have far more
powerful guns.
I didn't notice this. As far as I could tell, they were the bog
standard guns that the infantry has...
I guess Mobile Infantry is another name for
Population
Control.
That was the only explanation I could come up with as well... Still,
the first thing I expected to see when they said "mobile infantry"
was some pretty heavy tanks and stuff. To see people fignting with
nothing more than an assault rifle and a flack jacket was highly
unusual...
You'd think they'd have learnt their lesson from Klendathu that
once the
dropships have dropped the troopers, they'd get the fuck out of
orbit. How
comes they were so thick as to wait around, in *close* formation,
to be
blasted out of the sky a second time by the plasma bugs?
Yep, the "Lets all hang around in a tight formation/easy target"
was a
bit sad.
But then again, by this point you didn't expect to see an intelligent
reaction, did you...
Anyone notice how the uniforms looked slightly WWII German style,
and how
doogie howser looked like a gestapo officer?
It is a fascist society after all...
Few very good puns regarding that in the film... Like the uniform of
the intelligence colonel (the friend of Rico's), and other stuff like
that...
