DVD questions

I'm intending to buy DVDs of The Fellowship of the Ring, and also Akira, but
I don't know
which ones to buy.
The FOTR 2-disk set has the film on one disk, and extras on the other.
The FOTR 4-disk set implies that the film is spread across two disks, and is
half
an hour longer.
So my first two questions are:-
Do you have to change disks in the middle of the film with the 4-disk set?
and
Is the film compulsorily 30 minutes longer, or can you have it play like
it did in the cinema?
Does anyone know? I've emailed my usual (R1) supplier (DVD Box office) to
see if they know, but I figured some people here might be able to tell me
first.
wrt Akira, I was browsing DVD Box office when I noticed the recent
re-release, with the new English Dialogue, and also another version, due out
in about a week, for a dollar more. What on earth is this?

Yes, the extended edition is almost 3 and a half hours long, and they can't
fit it all onto one disc because of all the commentaries. The extended
feature is compulsory. still, gives you an excuse to get off your backside
and go to the loo :)

The newer marginally more expensive edition has a DTS soundtrack.

Unless you've got a DVD-changer like me. ;-)

Yes, though the break is aproximately where the break is between books 1 and 2
in Fellowship.

it did in the cinema?
Yes, there's no option to see the original

I've got the recent re-release which I believe has several different dubs on
it - still not watched it !

Huh?
Fellowship is 1 book.
I realise that the film stretches over into the start of The Two Towers book
a little, but I thought that was near the end?
(I always read my bumper-paperback-edition of LOTR, which is all in one
book, so I never paid much attention to the exact location of the split.)
So is this getting-off-the-sofa malarkey near the end of the film?

Grrr.
Any idea if it's worth it?
It's not 30 minutes of Tom Bombadil is it?
Extended versions of films I've seen so far:
Blade Runner: No big deal
Terminator 2: Quite cute.
Robocop: Don't bother (in fact, avoid)
The Abyss: Definitely a good thing
Leon: Oh yes!

Nope, it's just after Frodo wakes up at Rivendell. All three
volumes of LotR are split into two books. So Fellowship contains book 1
(Bilbo's party, Sam, Frodo et al leaving the Shire [Thickins LW] , Bree,
and arriving at Rivendell. Book 2 is about the Fellowship until the Boromir
tries to take the Ring, I think.

I think it's worth it - some bits that everyone grumbled about
being left out in the cinema are included here (like Galadriel's gifts to
all of them), and there's some added stuff about Aragorn and Elrond.
I know someone'll disagree, but thank God Jackson left out Tom
Bombadil. Of course, the absence of Bill Ferny and Bill the pony is just
criminal.

There's a bit with Sam speaking to Bill the pony.....

Spoiler alerts for those who've not read the books shame on you
Here's the end of the books within the books:
FotR:
Bk IFrodo comes to cross the ford and before the Rivendall stuff.
Bk II Frodo and Sam flee the rest of the party as they
TT
BK I is Gandalf/Aragorn/Gimli/Legolas and Pippin & Merry. Finishes as Gandalf &
Pippin ride for Gondor
BK II everything with Sam & Frodo and closes as the Black Gate shuts on Sam.
RotK
BK I is Gandalf/Aragorn/Gimli/Legolas and Pippin & Merry. Finishes as the
armies poor out of Mordor
BK II Likewise in RotK all the Sam/Frodo stuff is in the 2nd half and it's here
the narative is drawn to it's conclusion.
When the BBC did TT & RotK for Radio they intertwined the plot strands. And
they left out Tom Bombadil too.

There's also a 5-disk version for R1. It's got an extra disk with "National
Geographic Beyond the Movie: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the
Ring", whatever that is.
