Just finished Nightwatch and thought I'd say a few words....
This is a very different Discworld book to what we're used to, much more serious
in tone and theme.
Brief Plot Summary: Vimes has been accidentally transported back in time, as has
a killer from his own time. Vimes ends up in the Watch posing as a Sergeant, in
command of his own younger self. The only problem is he knows he dies in a few
days time....
Well we've got time travel, and that enables us to look at things very
differently. We've got younger versions of some of our characters - Vimes,
Colon, Nobby, Dibbler,Vetinari and cameos by numerous others - including a much
more serious sounding Death than we've been used to, we've got a still alive Reg
Shoe and we've got a nasty piece of work as Patrician who a number of people
want to get rid of and replace with a man by the name of Snapcase.... It's an
interesting lesson on how some of the people there became the people we know
today, and a glimpse that the city of Ankh Morpork was once not so nearly as
nice as it is today.
I've been critical of reusing old characters previously but this book is good,
right up there with The Truth in recent years.
