Ok ok can we stop this now? I understand where you're all coming from -all
of these points are valid and I have taken them on board. But I have found
that a lot of this year's members are very much interested in the film
showing aspect of the society. Compared with last year the number of people
at the films is much larger and there have been keen debates on choices for
upcoming films etc.
I certainly know that with regards to the committee that the Pub off would
be heartbroken without having to show off his poster making skills each
week.
Getting people to pub is really really really (i cannot stress this enough)
HARD! I'm trying (really I am) but again not that easy-people won't come if
they don't want to-no matter how much you stress that you're normal
(comparitively speaking).
In my humble opinion (not that it seems to count for much here) I think the
films are highly important (not life threatening to the society) but still a
key ingrediant in attracting new members.
Bitching is never a good thing. If you have a comment or helpful suggestion
to make to me about the running of the society please pose it to me and not
in proverbial terms masquerading as a hint.
Thankyou. Please understand I'm just trying to keep everyone happy
-including myself-this is not meant to be a bitch more of a helping hand for
myself to stop me from going absolutely insane.
Love to all
Abby

You're generally here for 3 years - which is the general lifespan of the
film society. Probably because some idealistic freshers set it up and
then
have to remain as the committee until they leave. *8)
We don't expect people to stay beyond the 3 years, but when you've met
some
really nice people and made lots of really good friends - it's a whole
lot
easier to stick around than go and face the scarey big wide world alone.
Or
at least thats my reason for being here.
I don't think you can expect that of people-some might want to stay on
thats
true. This debate has gone on so long that the original strain of the
topic
has long disappeared and is basically how other people would run the
society
if they were in charge.
Not entirely. Or at least my line of thinking has been trying to point
out
that
IFIS doesn't (or shouldn't) rely on showing films as there seems to
be
a lot of people panicing that
IFIS will die if we can't show films.
Much as everyone's input is nice and helpful some of you haven't been
on
the committee and dealing with the newly shuffled union for some
time-i'm
not sure if its how you all remember it.
*sigh* We're not saying these things because we think you should do
everything we say cos we've been around since the dawn of time. We're
just
pointing out stuff we've experienced before. Learning from past
mistakes
etc. Maybe some of what we've said isn't entirely true any more, but
that
doesn't mean that it's useless information.
The Union doesn't really change that much - it will always be filled
with
crap people doing it so they have something nice on their CV who don't
take
any notice of anything that their predecesors have done or said.
If people want to join just for the films thats fine-we shouldn't
persecute
them for wanting to do so just because they don't have an innate
capacity to
obsess- unlike me who obsesses over everything and other people I
know.
Wasn't suggesting persecuting anyone, just pointing out that as members
they're not really going to want to go for committee positions and if
they're the only members we have, then there won't be a committee next
year.
Sorry for butting in with such harshisms but I can't help but feel
this is
turning into a 'Rah its not how it used to be' debate-No its not going
to be
the same but we can all still have fun with the new committee ;-) and
still
do things like in the old days.
Thats OK, I have been trying to avoid that sort of thing. It's just
that
there seem to be a few people (not necessarily the committee) who think
that
films are the only thing the society does and that concentrating all our
efforts on attracting people who are just interested in films is a good
thing and forgetting that at the end of the year we'll be needing
members
who are interested in more than just watching films to stand up and take
over the mantle of running the society.
Anyhow...how goes the good fight? Has the SU got it's act together and
found/paid it's "we can watch films" license? *8)
