LotR DVD
Got my LotR DVD in the mail on Friday - 4 days early :-)
It's the first time I'd seen the film, missed it at the cinema as I didn't feel
I could sit comfortably through that long a film, probably right, I saw the dvd
in 2 sittings. There's no commentary on this edition of the film - for that
you'll need the special edition in November - but there's a whole disc full of
extra features concerning this film and the next.
As for the film..... It's very strange watching a film based on a book that I
first read over 15 years ago. Some bits were different to how I envisaged
them - Moria in particular being much more open than I personally envisaged,
and there were some liberties taken with the book, but not that many and at
least one of them (Arwen coming to rescue Frodo after Weathertop and flooding
the river) I felt worked better than the original version in the book, whilst
I'm not really able to see the point of having Aragorn meet Frodo between
Boromir and the boat.
Am I allowed a brief moan - or 2 ? I felt that Pippin and Merry were made to
look like complete fools, horribly clumsy and very little purpose other than
some light relief. Poor Boromir also gets a performance that makes him much
more overtly villainous than he appears in the book, and his coveting of the
ring is a little too heavily sign posted beforehand. It wasn't until his end
defending Pippin and Merry that I felt he worked OK.
Another watching tonight is called for I feel. The Professionals S2 and the
Young Ones S1 may have to wait.
