Dune Miniseries

Has anyone seen it and can tell me what it's like ? I see it's @ half price on
DVD in the MVC sale and I'm a little tempted....

I quite liked it - I could follow it better than the movie at any rate!

They're also apparently starting to make another miniseries... Who knows...
maybe they'll do the lot!

They re-ran it on Sci-Fi a few weeks ago and I've still got them all on tape.
In fact I'm still trying to remember to lend them to Paul so he can slag them off as well.
Perhaps we should do a mass viewing, then we can follow it up with a Brian Herbert
book burning session.

I thought it was okay. Some of the acting plain
sucked (I still maintain the guy playing Guerney
must have funded the enterprise).

Most of the costuming was okay - with the major
exception of the Sadukar. That's the second
sci-fi series that seems to be under the impression
that all elite fighting forces should be dressed
up like queens in their best glam rags. (Points
available for the person who can name the other..)

Special effects where great considering the budget.

The plot didn't deviate much from the books. Mainly
they just fleshed out the Emperors daughters role
a bit.

Having said that, I never really thought much of
Herberts plot anyway - it was the ideas that were
cool. That's why the film works, even though it
only pays lip service to the original story.

So really, I just don't get what makes this
so utterly terrible. I don't think it's great
but it is passable entertainment.

If anyone wants to know what Dune the Miniseries is like, then I would say it's okay but probably better to wait until it's on TV next time around. I wouldn't spend any money on it. I have read the Dune books more times than is probably healthy and I think they are the dog's wotsits. The film I loved apart from the ending (tacky or what?!) but I have to say I was not all that impressed with the miniseries. Some of it is worth seeing, such as the interpretation of the Bene Gesserit costumes (snigger) and what the Kwisatz Haderach can do (there, not a plot spoiler in sight!) If you still want to know more, we taped them from the Sci-Fi channel a few weeks ago, so if you think you're up to it then you can borrow it.
One thing I would say is don't rate 2 and 3 on part 1, as it's slow to start, to say the least!

Hate to be smug, but just have to do it - in three weeks time I'll have six weeks off!!!!!!!

I liked it, despite the odd bit of bad effects, dogdey dialogue (esp. where
it's straight from the book) and some storyline rewrites. It probably closer
to the book that most attempts.
