Hi,
I am a bit rusty on this...
The BG go back to ancient times and may even be around now. Mentats
were created as a result of the Jihad.

Butler was a BG sister who noticed that some hospitals were using computers
to decide who gets treatment and lives and who dies, and so she started the
Jihad (so it's should be Rev. Mother Butler).

I thought that the BG formed as a result of the Jihad.
Humans could no longer rely on computers so had to
develop their own skills. Various schools were
created in the aftermath, i.e. Mentats (Computing),
guild (Prediction), BG (Politics) and BT
(Bio-engineering).

Taken from the Book of Bob, 512th Edition, Appendix 17 (Fire Hazards)

Everybody knows this [story] was complete bollox and a fabrication to cover
up
the actual event. Which revolved around Steve [Butler] aquiring a lighter
whilst standing next to the intellegent machines who's intellect was so
high
that they thought themselves invicible and considered making themselves
out of flamable material a stylsitic gesture.

Later on all the people who stood there and watched the flames felt guilty
about not having done anything to help and retold the story as a great
Jihad.
Rumours that every member of the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood carries a
Zippo at all times has since proved to be true.

Some scholars have wondered about the suggested length of the Jihad,
(nearly a hundred years) and how it could possibly have taken Steve that
long to figure out how to use a lighter (even now witnesses can confirm
that the true length of this time should be about 3 seconds). Evidence now
suggests that following the end of the machines a Bob party ensued and
finally (in 108 BG) someone became sober enough to write down what had
happened.
