planetarion *?*

Anyone still playing this? If so whats the new season like?
Been having a look at it and they've added lots of features but is it
still heavily clan based?
How different is it to the first season?

I played last round... I don't anymore because it takes up so much time, but
I still hang around on Planetarion IRC. It is very very different from the
first round - there are now four races to choose from, each of which
specialise in a different area (stealth, warships, piracy, um, and
something) which has made quite a difference; jumpgates were introduced last
round, which are still crap and not worth using; it is very alliance-based
and Furgion (a combination of Fury and Legion, the two biggest alliances)
currently 0wn. There was something mentioned about trading, too, but I don't
know if it's been implemented or not.

Oh, and from last round it has been pay-to-play. This round you can either
have a paid account, or get a free account that only allows you to get up to
3 million points.

It always was very alliance-based. That's why I gave up on it. You couldn't
breathe without one of the big three alliances taking offence and destroying
your entire galaxy in "retribution". Talking of which, whatever happened to
Blue Tuba?

Most of the bigger members deserted to join Fury and VTS/Legion and BlueTuba
pretty much faded into obscurity. I happen to know for a fact that the then
leader of Fury happened to be a balding late 30's man (synthetic sid) who
did nothing everyday except sit in front of his computer and organise his
alliance. Apparently, he spent about a week just planning a farming schedule
with one of the planets in his galaxy...

I gave up playing because I realised that there was nothing I could do to
beat the players who do nothing but get up at 4am in the morning to launch
fleets at people, without having to resort to that level of play. The fact I
had my finals coming up was also a persuasive factor ;)

The first season was good as you could get by just on having a small
alliance with a few galaxies, as there weren't many big ones and everyone
was still trying to learn the game. The alliance part never bothered me
until it got to the point as you said, where you couldn't do anything
because of the big alliances.

Any other games like planetarion which are still in their testing stage?
Seems like thats the best time to play those type of games.

Dunno. I spent a month or so in Ambar, but that was just too random for my
liking. I've not tried any games in over a year though.

There was one called Starsphere (www.starsphere.net), which is more or less
a direct rip-off of Planetarion. Don't know if it's still going. There's
also www.farmwars.com, which is, er, 'Planetarion, but with cows'. I'm
uncertain as to whether this is a serious game.

The alliances did rather spoil the game last round - one of the biggest
Legion galaxies was right next to us... but we managed to hold them off most
of the time and even got a good retaliatory attack back at them once :)
There really is no competing with them though - I once got very annoyed with
their GC and launched a suicide attack at him - the message telling me not
to bother came back within 30 seconds (from several members of the galaxy).
And Blue Tuba are still around (albeit less so).

[REVOLT] against Legion last round :-) )
