Hello,

IFIS is thinking of having a Mind Feck weekend, a weekend where we will show
films that were designed to break people's minds and mess with their heads
(tee hee).

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of such films that could be
shown which would seriously twist people's minds into nice new shapes. Any
ideas?

Lots of episodes of Sapphire & Steel normally does the
trick. Finish those off with the final episode of
Twin Peaks, just to make sure.

Nah, last ep of TP is easy to follow. Show em "Fall Out" from the
Prisoner. If anyone is sure what's going on there then do feel free to
share with the rest of us.

I have "The Prisoner" on DVD, and there's certainly a few brainbending
episodes of that... I also have Videodrome on Video, and probably a whole
host of other things that fit the bill...

Pah, eXistenZ breaking your mind is a pitiful situation... If you can't
cope with the simple ideas in what is essentially "Cronenberg Lite" then you
will never cope with the rampant "huh? Eeeeew!"-ness that is Videodrome...

Ooh, I don't want to see it again, (nor do I wish to watch

eXistenZ. Or maybe Cube.

Any of the Croneburg's should do the job. Videodrome
is fairly bizaare. To be honest eXistenz is probably
the most straight forwards. On the other hand, it's
the only one I have so if you want to borrow, you're
more than welcome.

A directors cut of Urotsukidoji is currently winging it's
way to me, but that may be a little too much...

On a manga theme but less ... adult, I have Perfect Blue
on DVD. Great movie, follows a pop star who has decided
to become a serious actor. Her first movie concerns a
serial killer, but then deaths start occuring off set.
After a short while, both you and she start questioning
her sanity...

The station episode of Saphire and Steel is probably the
most wierd.

The Usual Suspects has merit, though everyone's probably
seen it already.

Braindead hits at a pure grossout level.

Just my 2 European cents...

Mr Hattrell is indeed being nice, not only suggesting that you don't

Well I did think about mentioning "The Seventh Curse", but it's
not a particularly mind twisting film. Bar the two moments
you've mentioned it's fairly straight action movie with a
slight horror theme.

It is interesting from the point of view of cultural differences.
The kids Darren mentions are to be sacrificed by the evil
bad guy in the usual fashion. He also has one of the principle
characters prisoner. The hero's, ignoring the finest Hollywood
traditions, sneak into the bad guys base, past the bad guy
slaughtering the kids, rescues their buddy and legs it.

It's also interesting to note that in American movies the bad
guy is always British. In China, 9 times out of 10, they're
transvestites (or at the very least effeminate men).

Anyone remember Zoltan from Battle of the Planets?

I'm curious to know where all the people who would have normally
shouted "Brazil!" at the first mention of twisty films have all gone.
Has it suddely become 'passe' without my knowlege?

I was assuming that no one is really confused by Brazil any
more. I could be wrong.

As for my two Great British Pence. Although not really in the same
league as a lot of those mentioned, "Battle Royale" (yes that

I was assuming that no one is really confused by Brazil any
more. I could be wrong.

Well if you've never seen Brazil before then it is ideal brain-melting
stuff. However I'm sure most people have seen it by now.

Battle Royal has a John Woo (classic that is not the arse
americanised films) level of violence and blood-and-guts with a
significant level of twist to keep it interesting.
As for the 'fragile little minds' they'll be okay, as long as they've
been watching a few hk films lately. The usual shock value of
things-never-done-in-hollywood may otherwise dent their
frail mental framework, as that sort of thing is present from the very
start of the film.

Haven't seen Series 7, but if you've roped it together with BR then
I shall have to look it up.

From Buffy the season 4 finalle might be worth a look - processed
cheese?

If we're going down this route the "brain eating" episode of The Tick,
perhaps?

Sadly, no. Zoltar (minor mispelling on my part) is to quote
the rather excellent Gatchaman site:

I can provide Series 7 on video, and Richard has it on DVD. It is most
certainly a worrying (and yet strangely very funny) film. It's even more
disturbing when you realise that it bombed in america because people thought
the trailers were for a *real* TV show.

But there are other twisty films: if you want SF, there is
"Thirteenth Floor", of course; and if you are willing to move
away from SF, there are things like "Wild Things"; "No Way Out";
"Ninth Gate"; or things like "Wild at Heart" or "Blue Velvet", both
by that nice David Lynch chappie.

Don't think it's really a mindfeck film (apart from
the ending not making a huge amount of sense).
However it is an excellent film and should be shown
anyway.
