Scary Monsters (Inc)
Just got back from seeing "Monsters, Inc" so here is a little review-ette.
"Monsters, Inc" is made by the same people who made "A Bug's Life",
and is also under the Disney umbrella. But don't let that put you
off. As you know, those Pixar folks are very good at what they do,
and the animation and attention to detail is excellent. There's also
a Pixar signature short at the beginning, which is very, very funny.
The thing that missed in "Bug's Life", in my opinion, was the script.
It was a pretty mediocre piece of storytelling done with fantastic
animation effects. Likewise "Toy Story" et al. The thing that broke
the mould this year was "Shrek", and the fear was that "Monsters,
Inc" was going to go back to the same old same old.
Well, the good news is that they didn't. The script is tight,
alternately funny and tense, and now and again quite satirical,
especially tilting at big industry and the way nuclear power in
particular is managed. I won't say more, because otherwise I
could be tiptoeing into spoiler-land, but suffice to say this film
has many levels, some of them pretty dark and surreal. At times
it made me think of "Brazil" - it's that wierd in spots.
I think many of you will approve. :-)
