Sci Fi

Whilst people seem to be almost at the blood letting stage of the
various "discussions" going on about teleporters, inertial dampners,
light sabres etc. etc. could I please remind people of one teensie
weensie little point that I'm beginning to think that some people might
have forgotten.

Sci Fi is NOT real. It is make believe. It is (supposed to be) fun.

It is not supposed to be ripped to shreds and any dubious scientific
terms / apparatus / thingies ranted about and "explained". That is not
what it's there for. It is there for entertainment purposes only.

One of the things that is fun about Science Fiction (as opposed to,
soap opera, or war movies, or even fantasy fiction) is the idea that from a
scientific point of view it is plausible. In a similar way, historical
fiction is supposed to fit in with the understood line of history. What I
am talking about here is the idea of genre conventions in fiction.

Some of us here even aspire to generating our own fiction (there are several
SF-type roleplayers here, including some referees) and obviously we are
aware of the conventions of the genres. So if we run an SF campaign (or
even a Star Wars campaign) we are bound to be interested in how the tech
works.

The point is that some of us are being entertained by speculating on any
science behind the SF. It doesn't mean that we are hating each other over
something that none of us actually wrote. Unless George Lucas happens to be
on this list. (If he is then hey, George, you're very quiet...)

Yeah, and we're having fun. In our own way. What, are we not cool enough
for you?
We've touched on many subjects in these 'rantings' which are of interest
to anyone with a scientific bent. It seems to me that we're using popular
sci-fi as a springboard for deeper discussions. Correct me if I'm wrong.

well, then I might have the faintest idea what the **** everyone's going

Plot elements in SF, as well as the acting/directing of essentially alien
creatures is certainly on-topic. (Like, how does one method-act an alien?
Does anyone method-act nowadays anyway? And isn't it interesting that the
dark, moody lighting in "Alien" is essentially the same as the dark, moody
lighting in "Dark Star"? Or is it?)

It would be nice to learn something from experts in a field about which I
know bo-diddley.
