Shopping
This was bugging me earlier in the week and I've decided to come back to it now following
the event. It'll probably get dismissed as yet another rant by someone who most of you
think should F*** off and mind his own business but there is a serious point to be made
here:
I'm keen to hear what the Camden lot got up to, where they went shopping and quite how it
was pursuant to Article 3 of the IFIS Constitution
www.ifis.org.uk/society/constitution/ )
"3) The aims of the society shall be:
I. To act as a science fiction society for students at RHBNC.
II. To provide a library for members containing books relating to the society's
interests"
Surely if we go shopping (or do anything officially sanctioned by the Society) it should
have some goal or purpose in accordance with the above quoted Article from the
Constitution ? I've no objection to people doing other shopping while we're out on an
official trip - indeed the entire trip was initially designed to allow a period of 2 hours
or so from when we finished doing the rounds of the shop to the time Pages opened to allow
people to go and do other shopping - this is where the HMV raid for videos, DVDs and CDs
usually takes place - as all who've been shopping with us previously well know. Indeed
the route was modified about 3 years back to end nearer a station (Tottenham Court Road)
that would allow people to get to more places in London easier and quicker.
The purpose of the trip to Central London was (at it's conception: I was there, as were
Richard, Colin & Mikey IIRC ) and has always been to tour the sci-fi shops in Central
London, let members find out where they are so they can come back to them in their own
time, to buy a load of sci-fi stuff according to our interests - including where possible
new books for the library - and for members of the society to generally have a fun day out
together in town. The venues have always covered a wide variety of items to buy including
comics, videos, books, role-playing and merchandising all of which fall under the vague
description of science fiction.
I fail to understand how what I now understand to be a glorified clothes shop to Camden *
agrees with the stated objective of the society and why it was seemingly officially
sanctioned - with members of the committee in attendance - against something which I have
quite clearly demonstrated is.
I expect you all had a very good time up there and got some nice stuff - but there's just
something about what happened that doesn't sit too right with me and doesn't appear to sit
within the stated purpose of the society in our constitution. If the member(s) of the
committee who organised this bit of the trip can explain to us how it is then I'd be
grateful. If not then I don't think such an activity should be officially sanctioned
again, certainly should not be organised opposite an event that is and if such a trip is
popular similar action encouraged to take place after the trip round the sci fi shops has
finished and not at the same time.
* the goals for Camden weren't stated beyond the chair's statement at 15:37 on 21/11/2001
(which in turn was in response to my earlier query):

I think he means places other than SciFi Stuff shops. Which is why
I thought there should be one group going to Camden for stuff like that.
