I would say that the chances of sex being solely for procreation, and
sperm
banks being the norm is highly unlikely inour lifetime at least. Don't
forget, it's only really been in the last 40 years or so that sex has
become
*acceptable* again, following the intense conservatism/prudishness that
prevailed in the first sixty years or so of the last century, which
perhaps
arose in direct response to the excess of the Victorians. And look at the
17th century...
The tendency towards bisexuality seems more likely than towards
homosexuality. Homosexuality goes against the continued existence of the
species, whereas bisexuality gives more possibilities to choose whether to
have sex which may lead to babies or sex which doesn't.
Following on from Chris T, in environments with no females (i.e. in labs,
or
whatever), it has been well documented that males will resort to
homosexual
tendencies, but will give these up when they are re-introduced to an
environment with females.
No opposing thumb you see - makes relieving one's own sexual tension rather
awkward ;o)
If you're going to look at the animal kingdom, maybe the place to look is
to hamsters, the only species other than humans to enjoy sex.
And following on from Darren, I don't think the two most over-crowded
populations, in India and China, have much of a homosexual population.
Certainly nowhere near the oft-quoted 10percent level.
The ten per cent level is actually a myth, although I can't recall exactly
how it came about - something to do with an early survey not actually doing
any statistical analysis on it, and guessing.
The other difficulty with counting numbers of homo/bisexuals is a matter of
identity. Whereas in a relatively open-minded and permissive society such
as the UK, identifying as homosexual or bisexual is not consdiered as
shameful as it is in other parts of the world, which means that statistics
end up skewed. Also, even in say the UK, identity affects statistics - I
know a few weeks ago I met a woman who identified as lesbian, but happily
admitted that she slept with men too.
P.S. So we're all agreed then? Willow, Buffy, Tara, Nicole Kidman and Anya
in Buffy the Vampire Layer?

wake her up again)
