During the summer I saw the spoilers for this massive film. I was
just wondering what
IFIS will be doing to celebrate the release of wnat is
going to be a very binding adventure?
One Ring... master of all the others...

Fair point, but UK world premiere is Dec 10th, general release is Dec 19th,
and I suspect all students will be on holiday by then, and most
IFIS members
will have watched it long before the start of the next term?

Don't really know what I'm doing then but I'll probably end up going to see
it locally.

No I hadn't noticed. I was looking for this earlier in the year because I'm
told its really good. Any news on whether there is a R1 version as well and
what (if any) differences there are?

No idea at all, try amazon.com or play247 and see what they have.
It's not bad from what I remember. Different .... The animation style is very strange
...

Both very important people, I'm sure, but probably not the "Lord Tom" you were
referring to :-)
There's only one Lord Tom. And I'm sure he said he was in it..... yes I know he was in
D&D - maybe I'm getting confused.

Depending on where I am at the time local will either be New Cross or
Brighton. Probably not Egham.

I did. R1 doesn't seem to have much in the way of extras (trailer and er...
that's about it), and they say that R2 extras haven't been announced yet.
There will however be a box set of the R2 version with a poster and a
'making of' book.
I guess I'll get the R2 version when I see it in the shops. Annoyingly it
will be released 2 days after the
IFIS shopping trip :-(.

Rather worryingly the main UK TF group is also having a get together/shopping trip in town
on the same day. 2 mobs of sf fans rampaging round central London !

Fairly sure i read somewhere that the reason for the
strange animation is that the film was made using a
technique called 'rotascoping' whereby animation is
drawn over frames of live actors performing as the
characters in order to get a more 'naturalistic'
character performace than with traditional cel
animation.
Usually this doesn't work too well, and produces this
strange feeling you refer to. Also, its REALLY
expensive...

Dec 10th premiere, Dec 19th general release. Just in time for the winter
solstice and/or winter celebration of your choice.

A friend of mine... Well, actually my Canadian kind-of-boss... Has that
tattooed, in elven runes, around his arm. People thought it was arabic or
something, kept asking him what it meant, so he photocopied the appropriate
page from the book and has it on his office door.

The rumour was actually that Lord Thomas of Baker was reading for
the role of Gandalf, which he did, but he turned the role down in the end as
it would mean spending so long a time in New Zealand and too much time away
from his wife.
