Are people really this f*****g stupid? The Rocksoc list must get three of
these a week, and now they've snuck on here as well.

Well, at least this guy is polite.

Hey now, be fair. I remember being surprised by the traffic this list
generates when I first joined. I also remember a time when I only checked my
email once every couple of weeks (hard to imagine now...). How many emails
have there been on chat in the last week? It must be about 50. Bit of a
surprise if you log in once a week to see if your friend in Bognor or
wherever has emailed.

This is why I don't think people should be signed up to chat at Fresher's
Fayre. Announce is fine, its a low traffic list and I don't think signing
people up to that at Fresher's Fayre is a problem. Trouble is that Fresher's
Fayre is the sort of environment where people will sign anything put in
front of them because they just want to get over to the society giving away
free booze.

At the very least I think you need to be giving people advice on how to
filter their email so that the chat emails get sent to another folder. I can
do this if you feel it necessary.

Most of these people are on ANNOUNCE ONLY, except for some who used the
website form to specifically request all lists.
Which is exactly why I've done exactly that.

Is a mail to Announce pointing out the existence of chat and that we're having lots of fun
here worthwhile ? There again we hope they've seen the initial welcome to the lists post
and read it.... though some seem not to have by the looks of things.

You don't get that luxury with Arts subjects, there isn't much in clearing.
But then, I got well more than I needed, having got an impressively low
offer (BCC) and getting surprisingly high a-levels (ABC) considering the
lack of work I put in. And now having chosen a suitably interesting
career, there's every chance I may end up with an MSc. I love the way
librarianship passes as a science these days ;o)

Yes, in a word. Allow me to divert briefly, and tell you a little about =

work. I am, as my job title says, an Analytical Biochemist. In reality, =

analyse the water you drink, for a variety of things, at all of the =

stages of production. Now, in an effort to detect burst water mains, we
allow people (Joe Public, you people out there), to phone us up, and =
tell us
of suspected leaks. These generally take the form of large puddles in
people's gardens/drives, on the roads, that sort of thing.

It's really quite amazing how many we get in just after we have a =
reasonable
bit of rain down. Sure enough, after every cloudburst and scattered =
shower,
someone will phone the line, we'll send a sampler out running, and =
he'll
come back with a sample bottle full of something bearing suspicious =
chemical
similarity to the raw river water we also test. Get the picture? It =
rains,
puddles appear, people assume it's mains water, and phone for help.

And, for those of you interested in such things, the laboratory charges =
UKP
430 per sample recieved, for a full Microbiology/Inorganic/Organic =
analysis.
Approximately 1 in every 1000 unidentified water samples will be mains
water, most of which we would detect with pressure sensors anyway.

Look, what people tend to forget when using WMD, is fallout from them. Now,
if you really want to irradiate/poison yourself, then go ahead, but at least
have the decency to do it a very long way away. Nuke them from orbit,
indeed, provided you don't mind being shot at by the satellite- based
nuclear missiles no-one's supposed to have any more.

I don't think there were any others. Charlotte (as per usual) far out did

I have the entire first season on DVD - along with an extra copy of Volume
1. MGM aren't sure when the second season will be released - some time next
year they think.
By the way, if anyone wants any DVDs from over here around late March, let
me know as I'll be back in April for about 3 weeks and can bring some over
with me.

i bought lots. I got some cheesy touristy tacky
souvenirs, but also came back with some superb items
such as a Buddy Christ, a walking zombie hand (that I
sellotaped an eyeball to), strange CDs, DVDs, cool
books (both strange ones and roleplaying ones), more
vampire costume (and accessories!), T-shirts, soft
toys and Star Wars merchandise.
