"Johnny Mnemonic" is a moderately trashy Cyberpunk film, based on a story by
William Gibson, that takes place before his Neuromancer book, etc.
I bought a video of it, because it was cheap, but seem to recall being
pleasantly surprised that it's reasonably faithful to the book. It's
certainly got the right sort of atmosphere about it.
It's a film that's often derided, but in my opinion unfairly so. Maybe I
enjoyed it more because I'd read a fair bit of Gibson beforehand, so I
understood more of what I was seeing.
If you want to borrow it for a video evening, that can be arranged. If you
want to watch it first, to see if I'm lying, that can also be arranged.
Perhaps you should poll people, and see if their rating of the film can be
related to whether or not they've read the books.

I've certainly read a lot (all?) William Gibson and thought that the film
was very enjoyable and faithful to the book (which is unusual considering
normal filmaker compleatly rehash books just to get them to fit their
ideas). I was a bit suprised at the choice of story that they chose to make
a film as he has written quite a few good ones. But I suppose it was a bit
of an introduction to the concepts of his writing and as you say trashy so
that it would prob get a wider audiance. I'd love to see how they interpret
the Finn if they ever did the trilogies.
B5 definatly better on screen than in the books.
Would also like to see some films from I.M. Banks book and more of P.K.Dick
(not the later stuff....bit wierd). You could certainly make them easily
with the technology around today.
