I am not sure that I can discuss acting with someone who thinks
Canoe Reeves is "fab". Except, possibly, in the "Thunderbirds" sense:
the one where his acting makes it look like he is on strings. I think
there may be too little common ground for effective communication.
I think there may be some confusion between "pleasing to the
eye" and "able to tell a story". But the same is true for the whole
film, so from that point of view he is probably perfectly casted.
Oh no, he's not that good looking, only really attractive in Bill and Ted.
But as an actor, he is superb. Perhaps not in Speed, then I will grant
you, he had a bit of an off day. But he has totally avoided being
typecast, and has a varied film history. I think he was particularly good
in Bill and Ted, with an excellent rapport with Alex Winter. the film
itself was never intended to be high-brow, and he settles into the role,
making Ted "Theodore" Logan entirely believeable, despite the evident
ludicrousness of the role. In Dracula, he captures the part of Jonathan
Harker extremely closely, it is one of the few parts which seems to closely
resemble the book. In Devil's Advocate, he manages to outshine the rest of
the cast in what is an extremely predictable plot, making his gradual
seduction by evil, and the eventual outcome a lot more realistic that it
would have been otherwise. His role in Dangerous Liaisons was portrayed
with emotion and innocence, which it certainly required.
I'll freely admit that his agent clearly doesn't help him choose the best
films to be in, but he certainly shines in most of the ones I've seen.
But for good fanning of flames, you really need to annoy me, not
leave me gobsmacked. "Fab?" Visions of Captain Scarlet... ...now
there's a role for Canoe Reeves ... ;-)
Of course, he can do anything :oP
