Hi,
In reply to the point on matter transmission - there was either
an earlier book on the subject - The Unteleported Man, where someone
refuses to be teleported cos' when he is a stream of atoms, he is in
fact dead and what comes out the other side is not the same person...
Another good example is a short Canadian cartoon - which has a machine
which copies the person and kills the original. The heroine make the
prof use it and sets the kill timer for 5 minutes - during which there
are two prof's. They play chess to see who should die - the winner
being the original (the copy can never be as good) and is then chopped up
into little pieces.
ST never deals with these problems - when they create duplicates,
mergers etc. Even worse Barclay shows that you are consense for an awful
long time in the beam... One thing they never do is to use them as weapons,
the technology has a million ways of being used in combat... Also it
take the whole of DS9 to store four people on computer, the buffers
which normally store the matrix (what ever that is) use some other method...
There are too many reasons to list why the transporter will never work...
Daniel
