Well, I never said my explanation was complete/correct. I am very
willing to accept any reasonably sounding "scientific" explanation

of

such a weapon... Not that I am expecting one... ;)

Once as a wind-up at school we asked our physics teacher how a light
sabre would work. He spent the whole lesson giving us an in-depth
explanation about how it would most likely be a superheated plasma
contained within a powerful magnetic field. This would account for
parrying with lightsabres (the interaction of the two magnetic fields),
as well as being able to deflect blaster bolts, if the field was strong
enough, as well as the thrumming noises it makes (just listen to an
electrical transformer). It's my preferred explanation, but how you get
a magnetic field into a sword shape is another matter.
