May I just boast a little?
Okay, so these fine, fine people of RHUL Information Services have finally
erased my account, so that I can no longer get the missives of you fine,
fine
people, but I have been to the Fantasy Film Fest last week and I need to
boast.
First of all: Hands up if you've seen "Final Fantasy". Oh damn, it is out
in
Britain now as well, isn't it? Ah well, I saw it Monday.
Okay, how about "Jason X", then? (Yes, as in "Friday the 13th, Part 10).
Jason in space, somebody just had to do it. Or not, as the matter may be,
as
the result is not really that breathtaking. It takes them until the last 20
minutes to come up with some good ideas, until then it is pretty much the
same as Parts 3-8. Still, some nice gore-effects.
This paragraph is for Adrian (but feel free to read it, anybody else, it is
a
good film): Thanks for recommending "Society" to me. They had a number of
Brian Yuzna's films on at the festival, but it takes a lot to measure up in
terms of pure weirdness to "Society". You may use your imagination freely
what seeing these wonderful make-up effects on the big screen can do to the
unprepared mind. I was prepared, though (i.e. I had not eaten before).
Also, dear admirers of the works of H.P. Lovecraft, I feel that IFIS should
really do a showing of the unrated versions of "Re-animator" and "Bride of
Re-animator". So much blood, so much to laugh at, it is marvellous. (Not to
mention giving a new meaning to "giving head" ;-) ). Also, J. Combs as
Herbert West reminded me of a member of IFIS. First right guess wins a
prize.
Although, I suppose that there may be some people arguing against this
suggestion and perhaps it is not advisable to expose your fragile little
minds to these films, but here comes one that cannot be argued about:
"Donnie
Darko". Fantastic story, well directed and featuring Drew Barrymore (for
the
boys). I cannot tell too much, though, as this would only spoil the film.
Anyway, it's fantastic.
And that's my boasting done, keep up the good work, make the freshers
mentally unstable and perhaps one day the decent people will be driven off
the campus and playing that new version of "Lady Marmelade" will be a
flogging offense (And I thought All Saints were crap.).
Stay froopy,
Christian
