Mercedes Lackey, Burning Brightly. When Archer and Nelda Chitward move
their family from a small rural village to the bustling city of Haven it
was a cause for celebration. After all, their textile skills had made
them leaders among their guilds. But their middle son Lavan had no
desire to live in the big city or be a cloth merchant. He also hated the
exclusive school he was enrolled in. His rage at the tortures of his
schoolmates left him with blinding headaches, yet even his pain was a
welcome respite from the tortures he suffered at school. But nothing
could have prepared Lavan or anyone in Haven for what was to come. For
from his rage a gift unlike any known in Valdemar would be born. US
Paperback, #6.99.
Julie E. Czerneda, In the Company of Others. When humans set out to
explore the universe they found a number of planets suitable for
colonizing. What they didn't find was intelligent life. And so the
terraforming of worlds began, with colonists housed in space stations
until their new planets were ready. But the technicians made one
all-important mistake by introducing the alien Quill to worlds where
they did not belong. The Quill were supposed to be destroyed when the
crews finished their work, but some survived, multiplied, and mutated
till they were no longer harmless. They were deadly. US Paperback, #6.99.
