I got a reply from Adrian Johnstone!

Gosh. Well, I was a member from 1978 to 1981 when I was an undergraduate
in Physics here. Several of us signed up at the Freshers' Fair in 1978.
It turned out that the IIS was not much more than one guy whose name I
forget but who had very long hair, and a trunk of paperback books. Members
had lending rights over the books. I think there were also some role
playing games: there was a parellel society that liked to play dungeons
and dragons (I think it was just the same guy) which I did not attend. I
think the IIS had about one meeting in 1978 at which a few of us sat
around drinking. After 1978-79 I think somebody in my social group called
Andrew Milton effectively became the IIS (taking over from the long haired
guy who might have graduated or been thrown out) and he had the trunk of
books in his room. Andrew is now some kind of environmental activist and,
I believe, runs a vegan restaurant near Penzance. Although I haven't been
in direct contact with him for 20 years we have a mutual friend. I'll ask
him to send your query on to Andrew. I kind of lost track of things after
the first year because I was deputy Rag chair in 1979-1980 and didn't have
much time for anything else.
Judging by the size of the `library' when I joined the society had indeed
been running for several years. They used to get a theoric from the Union
and just spend it on books as far as I could see. You might try and see
how far the Union accounts go back for: if they have theoric lists back
into the seventies then you could find out when the society started.
