I could be new to the way that things are run around here, but I
came from a SU that has had policies on life members being allowed to join
but not stand for committee positions, or vote for committee posts since at
least 1994 and they have in no way attempted to remove life membership for
the student union. The membership basically gets you into the bars join the
Gym etc, due to the Students Union there being classed due to licensing
regulations as a private members club. (The licensee was an employee of the
bar cub that just had to be re-ratified every couple of years
(one year were I came from we nearly lost the all the bars as
despite the importance of a quorate union meeting at this time only about 30
people turned up and someone decided it would be funny to hold a quorum
count, it was only saved by holding it a few days later, still within the
time that the bar club had to be legally ratified, at this point sports
clubs saved us as they did finally believe us that if we did not get the
numbers the bars would have to be shut down, as we would no longer be able
to legally get a license so they told every member of the clubs to turn up
or else)

They've been looking for a way to dump life membership for ages. The
main reason they haven't yet done so is that they would have to
refund the 16 quid membership back to all the old life members.
Looks like someone's found a legal loophole to give them an opt out.
Now that we are no longer entitled to vote, they can remove life
membership and institute a yearly charge for the use of the
facilities.
