Science Fiction:
Mercedes Lackey, The Serpent's Shadow. In the early years of the
twentieth century Maya works in her British physician father's Delhi
practice. All her medical prowess she has inherited from her father,
but her Brahmin mother too has skills she can teach her daughter, yet
refuses to do so. When both her parents are killed and she flees to
London, it is these very otherworldly skills that Maya may need to
stay alive. US hardcover, #18.50.
Raymond E. Fiest, Krondor, Tear of the Gods. With it's greatest band
of heroes off on quest to ensure the safe arrival of the world's most
holy relic; The Tear of the Gods, Krondor is left wide open to attack
from an ever growing band of scum, villains, and ne'er-do-wells. US
hardcover, #18.50.
Harry Turtledove, Through the Darkness. Following-on from the immense
achievement of both Into the Darkness and Darkness Descending Mr T.
continues this saga in masterful fashion. What he has done is take the
'concept' of the two World Wars of the Twentieth century, both the
conflicts and the politics, and imposed this rather impressively on a
world of his own devising. US hardcover, #19.99.
David Farland, Wizardborn. Some people have mentioned Tolkien,
Donaldson, and Goodkind in relation to Farland since the publication
of his first in this series, The Runelords. Gaborn, now the Earth
King, leads his people in pursuit of the Reaver horde which is
returning to it's vast underground lair. This is your archetypal saga
of heroic deeds, and dark evils, but what sets it apart is Farland's
command of writing and his realisation that people are complex, so
that his characters do not always follow the path you think they
might. US hardcover, #19.99.
Stephen Lawhead, The Mystic Rose. Continuing adventures of the family
whose fate seems inextricably linked with holy artefacts. When news
appears that the Holy Grail has been found, the Knights Templar will
let nothing or no-one stand in their way to possess it. And so it
falls to Cait, a young Scots woman to intervene and stop the Grail
falling into the wrong hands. UK hardcover, #17.99.
New in paperback:
Tanya Huff, The Second Summoning. Claire is a Keeper fated to defend
the world from supernatural disaster. When a Bystander from her last
adventure is left with the knowledge of her existence intact she knows

Claire may need Dean exactly as he is. US, #6.99.
Robin Hobb, Ship of Destiny. Volume three of the Liveship Traders
finds Althea and Brashen guiding their vessel Paragon through
dangerous waters in search of the liveship Vivacia, unknowing that
trouble is brewing amongst the unhappy crew. UK, #6.99.

tale from one of the greats of modern fantasy. In order to save the

Hmmmm... I must try re-enabling MIME on the
ifis lists and testing
pound-signs again. Last time I tested it, RHUL refused to accept emails
that it's own users had created! :-)
