Distress: A disease incurred by exposure to the prosperity of a friend.
We were sorry to hear this week of the passing of Gordon R. Dickson.
Mr Dickson has had a long career in the Science Fiction/ Fantasy
field, most notably the Dragon Knight series and the Dorsai novels;
collectively known as The Childe Cycle. His passing is a loss, and he
will be missed by fellow authors and fans alike.

Jonathan Carroll. The Wooden Sea. If you took the world and moved it a
few degrees off-centre, we would all be living in a world created by
Jonathan Carrol. He has for many years now been producing some of the
best works of fantasy written by human hand, and this latest work
shows he has lost none of his talent. Frannie McCabe is the Police
Chief of Crane's View, N.Y., a small quiet town, reassuringly normal.
But when he takes in three legged dog, Frannie's life is never going
to be the same again. When the dog dies, winking as he goes, events
take a turn for the strange, and Frannie begins to be plagued by
memories of his past, present, and future. Bizarre, intriguing and
quite simply wonderful. US hardcover, #17.99.
Gene Wolf, Return to the Whorl. This final volume of The Book of the
Short Sun trilogy, is a fantastic, literate conclusion to what may
well be his greatest work since the four volumes of The Book of the
New Sun. His search to find Patera Silk almost at an end, Horn is
starting to lose his sense of self, and as the story moves from past
to present could it be possible that Horn and Silk are the same
person? US hardcover, #18.99.
Harry Turtledove, Colonization: Aftershocks. The Master of Alternate
History returns with this volume in the Colonization series. Set in
the sixties, with Germany once again attacking Poland; but this time
trying to rest it from the control the reptilian invaders known as the
Race, America's fast growing technical know-how proving a problem, and
in China Mao Tse-tung's revolutionary army proving to be the biggest
thorn in the alien's side. US hardcover, #18.99.
New in paperback:
Mary Gentle, Ash: A Secret History. An epic fantasy tome from a woman
who must have a brain the size of a planet. As well as having pursued
a successful career as a fantasy novelist she has studied and acquired
several degrees in English, Politics and two separate History M.A.s.
With Ash she has combined her twin pursuits to produce a sublime work,
a tale of war in 15th century Burgundy, the mercenary warrior Ash, her
soldiers, and otherworldly creatures. UK, #9.99.
Ed Gorman, The Dark Fantastic. New collection of seventeen short
stories all of which are dark and fantastic. US, #5.99.
Robert Doherty, Area 51: The Grail. Continuing adventures of the team
based in the now legendary, not so secret American base and their
attempts to discover the whereabouts of the Holy Grail. US, #5.99.
Dark Imperium: A Warhammer 40,000 book. Collection of thirteen blood
pumping tales from Inferno magazine of 41st century high-tech carnage.
UK, #5.99.
Alan Dean Foster. A Triumph of Souls. Concluding volume of the
Journeys of the Catechist trilogy. Quests as we all know are not meant
to be an easy thing, but this one sounds like a doozy; Kraken infested
waters, berserk giants, skeleton armies, hellish demons, and thanks to
an ancient prophecy all that awaits our hero Etjole Ehomba at the end
is certain death at the hands of the necromancer Hymneth the
Possessed. US, #6.99.
