Nearly forgot to say that the reason the Doctor made light work of the
puzzles in "The Five Doctors" is because, when you look at them, they're
pretty damn easy to solve anyway, with the exception of that chess board
thing and teh constant pi. That's just beyond explanation.

If, as you say, he met Rassilon, he could have had a chat and found out
the answers to the puzzles... Or if, as has also been suggested, he
becomes Rassilon at a later date, then after meeting him, he'd know this.
All he would then have to do would be to make up the solution on the spot,
then remember it when the time came to build the puzzle. Being a Time
Lord, he'd have a good mind for this kind of timefoolery... And he gets to
look excessively smart in the process.

My memory of the puzzle mentioned below has the master telling the dr 'it's easy as pi' thereby telling dr the answer.
