Brain fuzzy. I particularly think I saw most of the cybermen episode from
behind my aunt's sofa. I don't know when it aired, but I'm guessing I was

about six.

Then you were born in 69ish. The story you remember is the early Tom Baker
Revenge of the Cybermen. The caves story that aired last year was Pertwee's
Doctor Who and the Silurians.

In my loft I have a Tom Baker Dr Who annual! (It's in the same box
as my Blakes 7, Return of The Saint and The Professionals albums.)

I think I've got most of the Tom Baker Annuals. Been enjoying the
Professionals in reruns on Granade Plus.

There's a lot I can't remember from first time out - never
saw the Tomorrow People for example....

Ah, now there was a series.
Great stuff. True nostalgia victims can ask to borrow
my copy of one of the books....

Never has had a video release.....

What do the current student members remember from their youth ? Does Doctor
Who stick out like it does for us older ones ?

Jon - depends where you lived. Star Fleet first aired in October 82 - same
weekend as SW was first shown on UK TV - and ran for about a year - inclusing
breaks afterwards. There were sporadic repeats over the next few years
depending on where you live. If anyone's good at judging the age of a tape by
which Central Logo is used on it we can tell when it last aired in that region
but it was while the Chart Show was running so must be late 80s. (Did you like
the tape ?) And as for the person who sl^gged it off.....

Of course it was. I'm just an idiot. Completely different monsters.
Weird how I have a better memory of a TV programme from 1975 (?) than from
last year.

No. There was a 1970s programme about teenage mutants with psychic powers.

You're making me wonder now, how SF has evolved over the years.
There seem to be several distinct categories of programme.

a) Ordinary human is really a hero
b) Humans work together in a civilised society
c) Extraordinary human is a hero
d) Science helps human to become a hero
e) Alien helps us to become better people
f) Humans struggle to survive in a universe gone bad

Trying to stick them in some sort of order, I get:

a Flash Gordon [original B&W]
a Buck Rogers [Ditto]

e Dr Who
b Star Trek
b Space 1999 [Dull]

c The Tomorrow People
d The Bionic Man
c Man from Atlantis
d The Invisible Man
d The Gemini Man

e Mork and Mindy

a Buck Rogers in the 25th Century
b Battlestar Galactica
d Knight Rider

After this there was a real hole, where SF went right out of fashion, before
suddenly along came X-Files and Babylon 5, and it came right back again,
often with some sort of apocalyptic twist (only to be expected at the end of
a millenium).

However, apart from the sudden attack of "one person trying to be a hero"
programmes back in the 70s, I don't see much of a pattern, and yet I'm sure
there is one somewhere. Maybe my categories need changing.

Or maybe I've over-analysed the hell out of this, and should just shut up
and crawl back under my rock.
