2001 documentary

Anybody else see the documentary - 2001 : the making of the myth on channel
4 last night?

I seem to remember Arthur C Clarke stating quite clearly what HAL stands
for, and there were also some neat explanations as to how they did some of
the special effects. The pen floating in space effect was quite clever
(stick pen on sheet of glass, move glass about in front of camera) and were
the 360 degree rotating shots within the discovery (huuuge ferris wheel
contraption built for the purpose).
The now much older Keir Dullea (Dave Bowman) doesn't appear to be that much
different from his made-up alter-ego in the film either.

One little thing that annoyed me tho was one of the women on there (can't
remember her name) who seemed hellbent on classifying the entire film as a
representation of primitive male aggression. (The agressive apes with bones
"It's a penis!!!", and the "Rape of HAL").

Yup.

I knew that they had made a rotating set for the Discovery, but I was very
impressed with the size of it. I was a little disappointed that they didn't
tell us how they did the stargate sequence. All we heard about it was that
they had specially built something out of Mecanno. There were no clues what
it was, looked like, or did.

Well she's a feminist, so she was bound to talk bollocks :-). In fact she
reminded me of that sketch from 'Not the Nine 'o' clock News'. You remember
the one where Rowan Atkinson came out with such lines as:

"It's not Nelson's Column, it's Nelson's willy. It is a gigantic phallus
thrusting into the sky..."

Andrea Dworkin or Camille Paglia by any chance (I didn't actually
see the doc, but remember reading one of those names in a
listings guide). Scary third-wave feminists both - basically they
hate men and think the world would be a better (but less populous,
obviously) place without us.

I think feminism has, as a whole, moved on from that. It's a shame to still see
these things being waved around. Most feminists now accept that men and women
have a part to play in modern society, and that it is important that both get
their rights, without being forced into male-imposed patterns. Working with
blokes, rather than against them seems to be the best approach these days.

Having said that, I think we needed the radical feminists in order to make the
point. So they have their place, but their opinions are extreme.

I think the point I was inexpertly trying to make was that these
people think turn about is fair play, ie; women should take
dominant positions in society for a while which would inevitably
start the whole sexualk revolution cycle all over again and be fairly
self destructive.

I think you're safe with that one. I was expecting flames for saying they
all talk bollocks, but no-one has disagreed enough to argue.
