[snip... and 1 week later...]
Prospero's Children by Jan Seigel. Ms Seigel is one of those authors who
has in their life worn many hats. Amongst her previous careers she lists
actress, barmaid, garage hand(?), journalist and model. Having decided
to turn her
hand to writing her debut promises great things and if you did not read
this in hardcover, the paperback is more than worth the price. Fern and
her brother Will are sent to spend the summer holidays in remote
farmhouse, and it
soon becomes apparent that the forbidding structure houses more than the
brother and sister. When two very different strangers Ragginbone and
Javier Holt begin to take an interest in Fern the intrigue truly begins.
Shades
of Susan Cooper. UK paperback, #6.99.
Hello Out There by Jack McDevitt is an omnibus edition of The Hercules
Text (completely revised) and A Talent for War. Both stories concern
themselves with the prospect of discovering or being contacted by an
alien race, and the
resultant effect on society. They are fine examples of the very best way
in which SF can explain the human condition and so well was The Hercules
Text received on publication it was the winner of the 1986 Philip K.
Dick
Special Award. US paperback, #15.99.
Child of Flame by Kate Elliot is the fourth volume in the Crown of Stars
saga. If you've read the earlier volumes you will not need me to tell
you to read this. If you have yet to encounter Ms Elliott, she has
produced some of
the best fantasy novels of recent times, and each of the preceding three
book in this series have produced enthusiastic response from both
readers and reviewers alike. US hardcover, #18.50.
C. J. Cherryh's sequel to Foreigner has arrived in paperback. Precursor,
US paperback, #6.99.
