DR rASSILON AND MORBIUS

Morbius was an old associate of Rassilon. If he didn't recognise that the Dr was Rassilon, I think we could probably take his word for it.

Of course this whole connection with Rassilon mystery thing could be no more than a last attempt to make the Dr more interesting by being mysterious.

You know I think you must have seen a different episode to me. I
definitely don't recall Mobius saying "Your not Rassilon".

He did the usual bad guy thing of say "Ha your puny powers are no
match for the might of Morbius". Followed shortly by the usual
bad guy "Nooo, it can not beeeeee". Or at least something like
that. It was just phrased differently.

I'll get Phil to lend it to me and watch it again.

I did not say that Morbius said You aren't Rassilon. He didn't have to. If the Doctor was Rassilon, then he would have recognised him and mentioned it.
One quick rule of history, what people don't say can tell you as much or even more than what they consider relevant.
I do remember Morbius informing the dr that he was no more
than a second class timelord. If dr was Rassilon, Morbius would
have said something about it, not told him that he was 2nd class.

Fair point. As I understood things from earlier episodes Rassilon was a
nearly mythical figure from the dim and distant past. The Time Lords knew he
existed but had elevated him to near god-hood. As the background to the Dr.
was fleshed out more and more mythology was built up about Rassilon and the
ceremonial significance of the items he left behind. Remember the one about
Rassilon's Key in Invasion of Time (funnily the Dr. worked that out easily,
but then he would anyway). The person who really understood the significance
of the items was the Chancellor (or whatever) not the Doctor. Obviously as
the series progressed the writers decided to use this invented Mythology
more and more to make better stories.

On another point, Dr, Who uses a lot of good old story telling techniques.
The Dr. is not unlike characters from Greek Myths (Iliad and Odyssey) or the
tales of Gilgamesh. He is a lone warrior on a long never ending journey
putting things right that some meglomaniac done wrong first. He certainly
meets fantastic characters and has more than odd few logical puzzles to
solve. The assorted scenes of the Dr. breaking into Rassilons tomb and a
similar episode involving the Daleks (IIRC) are very reminescent of India
Jones in places.
