TIE fighters etc..

If you want to shoot something like the Falcon, or a Star Destroyer in a
TIE fighter, X-Wing, or anything else fort that matter, there are a
couple of things to take into account.
(1) You want to live.
(2) You want to destroy the target (or your arse is toast when you
get back).
Therefore it is a good idea to be travelling fast enough to evade
incoming fire, but there is no point bombing past at mach 150, as you
wont have time to fire at them either. Just try it in any of the X-Wing
games and you'll know what I mean. Therefore, you need to slow down, and
as a result become an easier target. This is why Luke and Han were able
to destroy the TIE fighters.
Besides, if you watch the TIE fighters attacking the Falcon again, you
will notice that they aren't going that fast.

Yes, but the games, or in fact the film, aren't that technically
likely. A laser will not suffer from same targetting problems as a
conventional weapon, and a computer targetting system should be able
to cope with a target going past at ridiculous speeds if it is
equipped with a laser. You can always use an electromagnetic field to
deflect the laser at your target, if the rotation of the turret would
be a bottleneck...

Hmm... As far as my usual insiting on explaining everything in a
scientific way goes, the light sabre is basically a laser designed in
such a way that i has several laser beams going up from the handle,
which all cancel each other out at the top (being all at the same
frequency, this can be done reasonably easily).

As far as the fact that you can push on a light sabre with another
light sabre goes, this can, too be explained by the laser beams
interfering (constructively or destructively, I am not sure) in such
a way that they cannot go through each other.

I know this is all very imaginary, and that the explanation I
attempted will probably invite lots of flame mail, but whatever...

The point it - it is still just a laser, and missing when firing a
laser with a computerised targetting system is very far fetched. I
can understand being faster thana bullet, but being faster than a
laser beam...

By the nature of the name, a "blaster" can be anything you use to
"blast" someone or something with. This means the nature of a weapon
can be anything from a conventional ballistic weapon, rail gun, mass
driver, laser, phasor, some kind of plasma weapon, etc, etc, etc...

Good point Andrew, (I mean the whole E-mail, not just the bit I
included). Everybody seems to have forgoten that the TIE fighter
weren't trying to destroy the Falcon. As Lea (sp) said, "they let us get
away".

Er... Tarkin and Vader wanted them to get away, which is why they just launched
6 ships. The six grunts in those ships were desperately trying not to get
themselves blown away. THEY wanted to win, and were probably wondering why they
hadn't got any backup.
