I don't think any employers are reading this mailing list. Even if they were I think they should know that I didn't just walk out of the college gates and into this job. I have years of experience with computers, but because I didn't have those vital three letters I spent six soul-destroying months unemployed, followed by six months working my arse off in a job you really could train an ape to do. I'm here because of a little luck and a lot of hard work.

Hmmm. Well we saw Andromeda on Sky on Monday night. Not real brain
stretching stuff but a simple action program set on a space ship. Simon
posted a defn of sci fi some years back that pointed out something wasn't
necessarily sci fi cos it was set on a spaceship - this applies here.

It's a sequel to another video called bizzarly enough, "Mindgame" which
featured Sophie Aldred as a mercenary, trapped in a cell with a Sontaran and
a Draconian. The Mindgame Trilogy video features the same three characters
again, but in 3 seperate self contained dramas of their own, sort of like
talking heads with aliens.

I saw this in Backbytes in Computing's Backpage - or a similar location - a

Yes he was, examples cited are Delta and the Bannermen (yes, i know its a
comedy type story, but it's still cool, and don't even mention Ken Dodd),
Remembrance of the Daleks ("UNLIMITED RICE PUDDING!!"), Greatest Show in the
Galaxy (magic routines, Gods of Ragnarok, walking out of a tent with a f**k
off big explosion going off behind him and not even flinching!), Curse of
Fenric (just plain GOOD) and Survival (it even has motorbikes exploding!).
Then there's Doctor Who the movie where even tho he's only in it for 10 mins
he's still great!
Quite a lot after the screaming dolly birds (and Bonnie Langford, though she
wasn't THAT bad), the only one to beat up a Dalek!
He was indeed, but there are too many examples to cite, how about "These
shoes, they fit perfectly" and "Now would you stand aside before I shoot
myself".

I still think Rowan Atkinson would be very good on the strength of the Comic
Relief thing though.

ah yes, i was talking to Dave Chillard about it the other night, it is VERY
good, and the ending is sad, Helen A crying as she cradles the dead body of
her pet Fifi. Plus the Candyman is cool as well, a top stroppy amusing
villain, and that really great scene where the Doctor confronts the two
snipers and pursuades them to throw away their guns.

My favourite is probably Dragonfire.
Bonnie Langford turned up in a dream I had once. It was very weird - I started
off being part of a James Bond film, but after abseiling down a cliff, and
crossing a river, it mystically turned into Doctor Who and I was Bonnie
Langford! Eeek! I couldn't get over how weird I sounded with that squeaky
voice. Truly odd.
That would be good. Or maybe the tall one from League of Gentlemen, he could be
very good. If they had to choose an american, my vote would be for Johnny Depp
(wipe out the budget in one fell swoop, and spend what little they have left on
a great plot).

author? Yes, I think he would. He did play the role in fact in a comedy
sketch as part of last year's BBC 2 Doctor Who night celebrations and was
quite good (then again the aliens were funny too

He does have a very good handle on an English accent actually, and plays
Ichabod Crane in a rather Doctorish (that bizzare adjective) manner
throughout Sleepy Hollow. Plus he really suits a Frock Coat.

I'll bring along a better one tonight, sadly I no longer have the best one,

Yep, frizzy red hair, the lot. But the voice was definitely the most
disconcerting part.
Yes, that's the one. He is quirky enough for it, without being ludicrous. And
I also think he'd be contrasted with previous doctors, but still in the same
vein, which I think is most important.
Johnny Depp suits anything ;) Have you seen Benny and Joon? He does a kind of
Buster Keaton imitator in it, which is amazing. He is just so flexible as an
actor, he is also very good at choosing his roles, he is rarely in bad films,
and even rarely in films which are merely average, so if he were in doctor who,
it would guarantee it's excellence :)
:o) Oh yes, I could imagine that. And I could be your assistant. I'm not much
cop with explosives, but I'm pretty good at shouting Brill! at every
opportunity :)

Yet more conclusive proof of why American's should not be allowed into
space! I suspect this is going to be another show, where I'm cheering
for the bad guys.

I thought it was passable entertainment. Enough one liners to keep
everyone happy - "He was like a greek god or something...".
Cutesy graphics, and camp costumes to keep the Dr Who fans happy.

Certainly there were dubious science moments. Why would a ship
caught in the pull of a black hole, drift out again? More importantly
why did the grapnels fired into the hole to pull the ship out
not also suffer from dialation effects?

Ah well, back to work.

The effects were quite pretty and the Starship itself (someone mail a URL
for a piccy in) is quite nice in a TNG Warbird/Vorlonesque type way....

Acting: Suspect.
Makeup: Poor, especially the alien pilot.

But I still enjoyed it....

Having said that one of the Pilots I enjoyed the most - the pilot's title
was To be or not to be - turned out to be a right stinker of the highest
order - I shall not name the series because we are a family mailing list
here ....

I though it was a Farscape rip off...

I'd got as far as IDing the make up as Farscapesque at times - and Farscape
is itself a Buck Rogers rip off. Sort of - the man out of time element
which is common to both shows and was probably first done in the original
Buck Rogers. Not been able to get into Farscape to make a firm judgement -
it struck me as overtly American in a bad way when I saw it.

For those who are wondering about Gene Roddenbury's input there _WAS_ a
previous pilot to Andromeda shown in the mid 70s. The premise had a man
frozen now and reawakened in the future where he leads the community that
found him. It was entirely set on Earth - the space ship element was
missing. I can't tell you anymore without getting out the TV Zone article
in question but it did star Alex Cord - probably most famous as Michael
Colesmith-Briggs III (Archangel) in Airwolf.
