The Doctor Vs The Master

Hopefully this will start some lively and interesting discussion.

If you look at the relationship between The Doctor and his greatest
adversary, The Master, it is obvious they have the greatest respect for each
other. The hatred they show towards one another is also without parallel,
though the Doctors is tempered by his innate Humanism (or should that be
Gallifreyanism). To this end the Doctor has several times refrained from
killing the Master when he could do so. The reasons why they left Gallifrey
to roam the Universe is also shrouded in mystery. The Doctor claims that he
was dissatisfied with the non-committal attitudes of his peers and wanted to
do some thing to right the wrongs in the Universe. The Master we are led to
believe simply left of his own accord to wreak havoc amongst the Universe.
Given that The Time Lords could readily recall a TARDIS at will, we can
possibly assume they had a reason for allowing these roque characters to
roam around doing as they please, but monitored from Gallifrey.

I would posit that The Doctor and Master are in fact brothers, possibly from
an important and influential Gallifreyan family [1]. There was a common
event in their past that caused them to leave Gallifrey and is the root
cause of this hatred, a hatred only brothers angry at each can show. Knowing
the Masters character it is quite possible he tried to subvert some
civilization and got away with out due to the Gallifreyan no intervention
policy. This led the Doctor into his decision to intervene in other races
developement when they where faced with dangers beyond their power to
control.

There are many hints in some of the Doctor who episodes (notable
resurrection of the
Daleks - the one with the heavy weapons Dalek in) and in some of the New
Adventures
which suggest that the Doctor was Either Rassilon (The first time lord)
or a very close
colleague of his. There are many references to the Doctor being a
friend of Omega
(Another Timelord pioneer, and a known friend of Rassilon) and helping
him with his
early experiments (hence the `Hand of Omega`). The Doctors ability to
enter and
reprogram the Timelords Matrix on Gallifrey at will, also suggests this
as Rassilon
created the Matrix originally. Another hint is the 5 Doctors episode
where the Doctor(s)
seem to find it incredibly easy to crack the puzzles that protect the
tower of Rassilon.
In this episode the Master also gains easy access suggesting that he too
was close
to Rassilon and the early timelords...

Yeah, right!
I suggest that you read The New Adventures "Lungbarrow" and "The Dark
Path". These provide definitive backstories to both the Doctor and the
Master, revealing who they are, their relationship to each other and why
The Master is such a total wacko. O.K. they might not be accepted by the
BBC, but they were written by people who wrote the series and they are
much better explanations than the BBC has been able to come up with.
The time/space continuum is very, very big. It's entirely possible that
the time lords lost track of our two favourite time lords when they
left. In "the war games", they were only able to recall the Doctor once
he had betrayed his location with a request for help.
