Back on the scene

Well, its taken me 15 years (is this a record?) but I'm back on the IFIS
scene. Some of you old-timers may remember me from 82-85 - the days of
strange constitutions, unusual committee members (the drinks machine in
Athlone Common Room for example) and contributions from our very own
Circling Poet. I have some of these things as IFIS memorabilia to share with
you all some time.

Mind you, we didn't have meetings down the pub in those days, there was no
B5 and as Publicity Officer I had to do my best with hand-drawn pictures and
what passed for email on the VAX. Youngsters nowadays don't know they're
born... .

Anyway, what we talked about mainly was books - this was in the Hitchhikers
heyday and it showed - but we had our Trekkies (as they then liked to be
called - doesn't that date me again) and Whovians too.

You know, that's one saying I could never understand; of course we know
we're born, we learnt all about that sort of thing in school. Besides which,
if we hadn't been born, we wouldn't be here to read e-mails like this. Ergo,
we have, at some point in our past, been born.

assumption that you were born. Now say you were either decanted from a
cloning vat/spaati cylinder or just popped into existence ......

82 - 85.... The good Doctor went from 5th to 6th incarnations. The long
awaited Tripods adaptation showed up. 2 good Trek films.

It's certainly a record for length-of-time-absent-before-a-return.
We've got a few folk from '86 still hanging around who can remember IFIS in
its pre-pub incarnation where the theoric was spent on books, tea, and
biscuits. Patric "Magus" Toms and Jenny Gould are the only people I can
think of who pre-date that and are still around.

Ah, yes, I remember them well. I was there when The Magus was given his
title. I can't remember exactly why - he was already Treasurer. I think he
just liked the title. And if he is STILL known as that he must be pretty
fond of it.

I'd wondered what became of her. Say hi to her for me. Tim Barnes was
around (I still have a membership list - how sad is that?), but I don't
remember him. Your era too?

It was only much later, when there was a lull in the telecoms market that I
decided to escape the 1992 mini-recession by getting a degree. So I applied
to RHUL, and they offered me accommodation in-hall.
