Last week we were praising the haunted fishtank for having lots of
science fiction, how it seems we are saying they don't have enough...
Even without DrWho we still have more on TV than for a long time.

No we're saying that their treatment of Who is

But, I must agree that reshowing DrWho was a great idea where as > replacing

it with the > Simpsons etc. is pants... >

I don't want to be seen to defending the Beeb, because believe
me I'm not and I want to see DW back on TV as much as anyone, but
taking a wild guess I'd say that they put out those two stories (or was
it three I have late classes on a Tuesday and tend to get confused)
knowing that they were high profile and would be likely to attract a large
audience.

It is 3 stories. What happened is that following Who night auntie announced a
Pertwee repeat season. Unfortunately they got to the Silurians which is long
and boring in places. Viewing figures went through the floor, they paniced and
went "we need Tom Baker and the Daleks" and went for Genesis. Again. It's
been repeated a fair number of times, everyone's seen it - result - more low
figures and the conclusion that if their 2 masterweapons won't work that who
repeast should be consigned to the bin.

I wonder what would happen if they'd have shown Destiny of the Daleks instead ?
(can we have this on a video night ?) Reaped some of Uncle Tom's highest
ratings .....

Unfortunately what probably happened was that only the ultra hardcore
DW audience, who'd watch anything with the Timelord in no matter how many
times they'd seen it, tuned in and the general viewers who have also probably
seen some or all of these stories before, disappeared after a couple of weeks.

See above comments on their panic. IMHO they should have stuck to it and gone
onto Inferno and Terror of the Autons which are excelent stories....

Having read the inferno book I can't say that I've had the pleasure of
watching the telly series.

Perhaps if the society itself enquired about it you might
get a better response than the usual one.

I'd hate to think that IFIS stood for "the video evening
and decent library society" and nothing else.

well, I've got a few contacts in quite a few other Uni's SF Soc's (Aber,
Oxford, Imperial)

Perhaps a combined complaint campaign?

The BBC may be a huge corporate entity, but lets see them ignore the 500+
vocal fans that could deluge them in mail...

I should hope that there are a lot more than that....

there damn well should be.

on a side note, back when I had Sky in 95/96, I seem to remember UK Gold
used to show
lots of Blake's 7, Doctor Who and other stuff. Perhaps that could explain
the lack of viewers for the BBC,
cos everyone's watching them on sky instead?

I would imagine that the BBC - can someone check ? - has a feedback address on
their web site.

A few _POLITE_ emails wouldn't hurt (but see below). Just enquire about the
whereabouts of the Who repeats, ask why they took Pertwee off, why they chose a
story that had been repeated terestially at least 3 times alreday (mid 70, part
of DW & The Monsters, part of the 92 repeat season. Possibly one other) Point
out the series continued popularity - in fact the recent release of Web of Fear
on CD sold out within days, I've only just got my copy which I'm listening to at
the moment.

Unfortunately the days of fans campaigning and getting something done are long
past - fan groups are now looked on by the BBC as a bunch of weirdos. I'm old
enough to remember the "day of action" phone campaign and Who fans came out
looking rather silly.... And I'm also used to the BBC ignoring people. I sent
them an email (which they'd been soliciting) on the future of GLR, I had nothing
back from them and the next thing I know is that the station's being
replaced....

Inferno: I wrote an article on this - anticipating the repeat - for the Mag
which I believe is out (?). I've got it on tape and can do some copies...

The BBC are after ratings at the end of the day show them that
people will watch the stuff and that it still has support, and
maybe they'll figure out that if they listen to the viewers
once in a while they'll get better ratings.

But, as already pointed out, they have been listening - the ratings for
the recent series have been very poor. Convincing them to show another
series will take a lot of effort, because they'll assume that there is no
interest.

Personally I think they'd do a lot better if they showed more than one
episode a week - the episodes are too short otherwise.

The problem with tha Chris is that they only have a 25 minute slot (barring
irregular events or special timetableing (sic)), hence the preference for
25-minute programs. The large number of american imports stems from that
these programs were designed with 5 minutes of adverisements in mind, making
a total of 30 minutes per program - the ideal time period. In a similar
vein, things like Star Trek were supposed to be one hour long, but remove
the 15 minutes of adverts, and you end up with the BBC's 45 minutes.

77 isn't really too old to be playing a 1,000 ish year old Time Lord is it,
he's certainly more physically fit (and mentally aware!) than William
Hartnell was and he was 20 years younger! Look at the physical things Lee
did in Gormenghast like the swordfight etc. (and yes it was him and not a
double)

It is not at all unlikely to find her sexy, it's just that you wouldn't find
William Hartnell sexy which is my main point (although I presume Heather
Hartnell did).

She did the Doctor Who Comic Relief in which she played the Doctor's final
incarnation, that is an SF connection. The idea behind my argument is both
she and Hartnell were of similar age at the time of playing the Doctor but
whilst he is considered as the irascible Grandfather Doctor, she was brought
in to play the sexy female Doctor.

missed what, the Sylvester McCoy? I'm flattered. I'm sure I'll launch into
them again at some point, although probably not again in Charlotte's Garden,
in the middle of the night and at FULL VOLUME.

Believe me, neither is as scary as the video/single a certain pointy-eared
first officer did about "The Hobbit"

Mind you, the album a certain android second officer did ("Old Yellow Eyes
Is Back") is quite good (my father has a copy of it), especially the song he
did with the Sunspots (Patrick Stewart, Michael Dorn and Jonathon Frakes if
I remember correctly).

Then you haven't seen "The Return of Captain Invincible", the ultimate
comic-book cheese film, where he does a good shake at singing as "Mr Eeeevil
Midnight", against Alan Arkin (the psychologist in "Grosse Point Blank") who
plays The Captain.

Think of a film that does to the "Superman" genre what "Airplane" did to the
"Airport" films. I love it. Richard and Jenny are sick of hearing about
it... :-P
