The Gap series by mr donaldson is classic.
The series starts with a small scale story concerning a space pirate
and a cop, and as the books progress, the background to their originally little
story is revealed, as they become pawns in a galactic power
struggle. It isn't just betrayal by their own race that they have to cope with.
They also have to deal with the Amnion, a sort of genetic Borg. (But far better realised and far more dangerous).
None of the characters are perfect, many are borderline insane,( Morn Hyland
with very good reason)
The Gap incidentally is hyperspace.
I realise I haven't described it very well but that's what happens when you decide to write an email with less than 3 minutes before you must leave
to get home.

...'Where am I?'
...'In the VLA'
...'What do you want?' etc etc
.. I am not a number, unless you happen to be counting in roman.
