For my money one of the best books of (relatively) recent
years is The Legacy of Heorot by Niven pournelle and barnes.
It's a sort of alien monsters threaten colonists type plot. What makes
it special is the attention to detail in the biology of the Grendel - that is the name of the monster obviously - and the KILLER twist about 100 pages from the end. Once again this twist is perfectly logical in the light of grendel biology and even answers any nagging questions you may have had about how the grendel got there.
For those who don't know, Boewulf killed grendel, and grendel's mummy killed Boewulf. Boewulf lived in Heorot. that is the exploon of the title.

...'Where am I?'
...'In the VLA'
...'What do you want?' etc etc
.. I am not a number, unless you happen to be counting in roman.
