Okay this has been bugging me for a long time but I'm sure you
people are the ones to explain it to me. Trills, yeah? What's up with them?
Phil's the StarTrek expert here. I tend to watch about 1 in 4 DS9
episodes and 1 in 30 Voyager. But I digress.
Are the parasites the ones in control or the hosts? Or is a new organism
created with a smattering of the personalities of both?
Depends on whether you want the official Federation answer or not!
The official line is that a new organism is created with the smattering
of personalities. However, it's blatantly obvious that the parasites
take fairly complete control. They maintain old friendships, and
characters regularly turn up that recognise the trell even though
the bodies are completely different.
If this is true what's the ratio?
Looks like about 90% / 10%.
Does it depend on the strength of the personalities involved?
Probably. The parasites go out of their way to choose people with
really limp personalities to posses. The graft "goes wrong" when
implanted into people with strong personalities (someone else can
probably name the episodes where this happens).
In fact the parasites control the entire planet. They have all the
positions of power, and all the subjugated people are brainwashed
from birth that it's a great thing to be selected as a host.
The hosts seem to be selected on a criteria of physical beauty,
fitness and - allegedly - intellegence.
Does the parasite still retain the memories of its past hosts
before they were joined? If so are they remembered as if they were its
memories or just a kind of detached knowledge that these events occured?
Definitely detached. In fact, they can summon them up as hallucinatory
friends and temporarily impress them on other people.
I have similar questions about vampires who have had their souls
returned (mentioning no names).
No idea. There's not enough evidence to draw from. I suspect that
it's a seemless join. He certainly seems to go out of his way to
do the whole angst thing.
So anyway ... um .... yeah - I just wonder sometimes.
I think this explain why children RUN PAST MY WINDOW 'Run away from scary
Trill man' they say.
No that's just the big sign we put up that says "Pedaphile in residence".
(Perhaps we ought to stop for a week or so...?)
