Welcome!
Welcome! I've just added a load of addresses to the IFIS Announce
mailing-list. If you're wondering what on earth this is, and who I am, and
what IFIS means, you have probably forgotten that you signed up for it at
Fresher's Fayre! We're the Sci-Fi / Fantasy / Horror / Cult / etc society
who show lots of cool films and have a great library, and regular social
meetings and everything.
Remember now? :-)
If not, just skip to the bottom to learn how to unsubscribe. DO NOT reply to
this mail with "unsubscribe" requests!
IFIS has 4 mailing lists available:
* "announce" is for the broadcasting of important information amongst IFIS
members. Meetings, new books just released, new series about to appear on
our TVs, etc. This might (perhaps) later be moderated so that only
comittee members can post directly. All other posts will be sent to a
comittee member to check first. All replies to "announce" posts go to
"chat"... It makes sense, honest.
* "chat" is for members to generally chat about anything sci-fi / fantasy /
other IFIS related. Anything at all. Burning the books, how crap last
night's episode of "Voyager" was, who would win if the death star met the
borg, anything. This list is not moderated. Anyone can post to it. It's
also used for chatting about the announcements - see, it DOES make sense.
* "writing" is for the exchange of creative writing. In other words,
somewhere where IFIS folks can post F&SF writings of their own, and have
them "gently critiqued" by the other readers.
* "project" is to discuss any current projects that IFIS is doing - at the
moment it's a bit quiet but theoretically we're discussing an IFIS film
with cheesy acting and even cheesier special effects that some members
want to make for a laugh.
To mail one of the lists, you mail LISTNAME@, where LISTNAME is
one of chat, announce, writing, or project
Anyone can join the mailing lists providing they:
* Are a member of IFIS (this requirement seems reasonably optional
at the moment, actually)
* Want to talk about Sci-Fi/Fantasy/other IFIS stuff, or listen to other
people talking.
* Have an e-mail account
Guidelines
Ages ago I wrote some approximate guidelines for the 2 main lists, and
nobody's objected to them, so I'll quote them here:
For the moment I suggest (but won't rigidly enforce) the following
guidelines:
announce "Video evening tomorrow"
announce "Christmas dinner arrangements"
announce "sci-fi convention next weekend in birmingham"
announce "AGM next week in MLT"
announce "that sci-fi shop in egham is having a book sale!"
announce "New series of blakes 7 starts december 12th" if you're
just telling us?
etc.
chat "New series of blakes 7 starts december 12th" if you're
intending to chat about it too.
chat "that sci-fi shop in egham is actually quite expensive"
chat "where's our bloody library"
chat "grumble moan insult jenny whine whinge"
chat "gripe mutter insult adam whilst we're at it, criticise nag"
chat "Why have I got too much email"
chat "how should we REALLY split the lists"
chat "what should we do about all these damned ex-students"
chat "what should we do about all these damned students"
chat "borg v death-star, value of pi near black holes, etc etc
etc"
chat "isn't terry's / douglass' / whoever's new book really
cool?"
ifis-chat should probably be the kind of stuff we TALK about down at the
pub. ifis-announce should probably be the kind of stuff we grab everyone's
attention for and SHOUT about down at the pub, and/or put up posters for,
give out leaflets, etc.
Just quickly, some important bits of "nettiquette":
* Do NOT quote the whole of a 5-page email to just add 2 or 3 lines of
reply. Trim where appropriate... On the other hand, DO leave enough
context that people know what you're answering. An email suddenly saying
"yes" in amongst 20 different conversations does NOT make any sense.
* Chain letters, virus warnings (esp fake ones) and non-sci-fi related
humour do NOT belong here. Try to stay on topic.
* Try to keep flame-wars off the list. If you're getting angry at someone,
please take it to private email so the rest of us don't have to put up
with it.
* TYPING ALL IN CAPITALS IS NOT NICE. IT IS CONSIDERED TO BE "SHOUTING" AND
IS ACTUALLY NOT THAT EASY TO READ EITHER
* Please DON'T mail more than 1 list at a time. If you're trying to reach
all members, "announce" is probably the list you want. Mailing both
"announce" and "chat" won't get to any more people, it'll just mean most
members get annoyed because they got 2 copies.
* Remember replies to "announce" go to "chat", so if you're not a member of
"chat" yourself, you'll miss everyone else's replies.
These are just my guidelines. As you can see, I'm not even certain about all
of them myself. Better suggestions are welcome - rant and rave about this on
CHAT please, not ANNOUNCE.
Joining / Leaving the lists
If you wish to join or leave any of the lists (for example you may wish to
join "chat" if you like lots of chatty emails), or to change subscription
addresses and things, simply fill in the form on the web-pages at:
www.ifis.org.uk/resources/ifispedia/guideline_to_the_lists.shtml
... or send an email to nick@, or lists@
If you find yourself receiving multiple copies of these emails (often the
case at this time of year when 2 slight variations of your address end up on
the list), let me know. Also if anyone wants their own ifis email address
like yourname@, let me know what address you want and where you
want it to be forwarded to, and I'll see if I can sort it out for you.
Finally, please have a nose around www.ifis.org.uk/ if you've not
already done so. You'll find info about what's happenning, archives of these
mailing-lists, and all kinds of other "interesting" stuff. Feel free to
contribute yourselves too - any interesting links, articles, or tips, let me
know! :-)
I'm sure the rest of the committee will be in contact soon to let you know
what films we'll be showing. In the meantime, welcome to one of RHUL's most
active societies of the last 30 years!
