The committee has come to an agrement that the first IFIS meetings (apart
from the one next week) will be held at crosslands. This has been done for
many reasons, all to do with the fact we have had no real new blood entering
the scoiety in the last year.

Film wise, we are still waiting for a final decision (all depends on
delivery dates and availability).

Flame on!

On the whole I think that the plan is good from what I've heard (there is
more to it than what Carlos has said). The only problem I can see, is that
it involves Crosslands, and one of the main reasons we stopped using it for
IFIS meetings, was because it had a habit of being shut or booked and so we
couldn't use it. But that shouldn't be a problem if we're only in there a
week or two.

I guess you'll get a few students who, in their drunken stupour, won't be
able to remember where the pub is - the route we'll be taking on the pub
crawl will be winding around the back streets etc. - but we usually provide
a map and directions at FF anyway?

But it is good to see the committee is taking active efforts to promote the
social meetings of the society. Personally I'd move the video night so
they don't clash but that arguement is best left to another day/medium. *8)
They'll need to get used to it eventually - it's where they'll be living in
their 2nd year if they're lucky. If they're unlucky, they might have to
walk up the hill from Egham.

Is it my imagination or is the mow becoming markedly less friendly towards
ifis bods atm anyway? Are there another venues that may be better after the
first few meetings in crosslands...

Ranting at anyone won't solve anything. It's their pub and they can do what
they like with it and if we don't like it, our only recourse is to vote with

They don't know anything about us. As far as they know we are a small group
who show up once a week - maybe a bit often - and have a meal and a couple
of drinks. They have no idea just how many of us will be turning up in
future. This week was the first week we've turned up in large numbers since
they took over.

And in case anyone has forgotten, we had exactly this problem when we first
moved to the Mow. After a few months landlord settled down and started
treating us like valued customers. If we move to another pub I'd expect
we'd have exactly the same problem - unless we find another pub that already
knows of us...the BeeHive maybe, Steve? *P)
Well thats one of the things that nearly got us thrown out with the previous
landlord - maybe when they've calmed down a bit? *8)

ok, I think the the Barley Mow is still probably best
because when you look at the other pubs there isn't
much wrong with the mow:

1. Prince of Wales.
Dodgy. Scary. Too many 15 year olds pretending they're
very grown up. Also is closing down I believe.

2. The Holly Tree
Not very student friendly, and the place the 15 year
olds would go to when the Prince of Wales closes.
Also because of Irish music night is crowded on
Thursdays.

3. The Beehive
If it's the same landlords then I think we'd better
stay away given our previous escapades! A bit small
but has nice fruity wines.

4. The Armstrong Gun
Very nice pub but has not much room and tends to get
very crowded.

5. The Happy Man
Full of student clones and their loud rugby
player/footballing boyfriends. Crowded and noisy.

6. The Sun
Lovely pub but too far away!

7. The Monkey's Forehead
Would you drink in a place called the Monkey's
Forehead? Nooo! Trendy bar of too many bright colours!

8. Any place on campus apart from Crosslands
Noisy and crowded. Also needs a student card to get
in.

The only OK place apart from the mow is Crosslands
actually, the drinks are cheap but it isn't always
open.

I don't know really. It might not be that bad if the
new landlords get used to us. The old ones thought we
were fine in the end!

Actually I like drinking there? It's not a bad place, and makes a very
nice change.
Not really, as long as one member has a student card they can sign in two
or three people. So getting in isn't a real problem. If we wanted an nice
quiet and non-crowded place maybe we should try finding a room somewhere

It's always open on a thursday (maybe the back area isn't but the main bit
is), it's only not open weekends and some fridays.

Also, Chris L, can you not call up the chair and rant at him please! He
is a member of a committee so you should really be talking to all of us
not just him. Next time send it to chat or have a word with US at the
where ever we end up meeting.

Two ex-employees of our New York branch are still missing. The clients of
company we merged with last week lost 10 people in the towers and one on the
plane.

This was a personal email addressed solely to myself, I was a little taken aback by what he had written and I had told you this. In no way did i go on and on about him signing all his emails in a similar fashion.
The difference is that he is not using personal insults and abusive language on a mailing list available for reading by most of the membership.
I will not tolerate the use of abusive language or personal attacks upon any of my membership, let alone a member of the committee. Cool. In light of that would any of you like to rethink any of the wording of the mail
sent to announce@ last Thursday night then ?

I'd like to think that 6 odd years slogging round London once/twice a year by foot with a
bunch of students in tow, drawing maps carefully noting the location of all the good
central London sci fi shops and generally pushing my body too far for a day might have
been worth a word of thanks or possibly advance/personal notification that you thought
that my services were no longer required. (Especially when I was actually in the pub not
2 hours before that mail was sent)

A couple of other pts as well from the last few days:

We have had some very low years membership wise before - it goes up and down from time to
time. My year started very badly - Me and Matt P - but picked up as time went on.
ChrisT - who else was there from your year who joined at the beginning ? 93/4 is the
first really huge year I can remember during my time with the society.

Our relationship with the last BM management got off to a bad start too - they tried to
chuck us out because someone brought in a drink from another pub. Give em a few weeks so
they can get used to you (again).

ChrisT was right to pt out that the Soc has had problems with Crosslands before. I'd
have thought a regular social meet location is better than switching round places on
campus (and eventually off during the holidays) subject to the whims of management and
dinner bookings. If you're going to be meeting for a film on Campus first, is there any
problem processing up to the BM afterwards ? It's somewhat easier for Students to get
out than ex-students to get in - especially if we're looking to park somewhere.

Yes I think I should.
Your efforts over the past years are of course very much appreciated
by this committee and all past committees, and I would personally like to
thank you for all the hard work you have put in.

I would also like to apologise for the way in which both the
statement was phrased and the way in which it was tacked onto the end of
another email. I am sorry Phil.

The way it should have read is that the committee is thinking of
ways of how to cover all the differrent shops that the varied membership of
IFIS want to visit when on the shopping trip. I of course realise that a
large number of the membership like visiting Forbidden Planet, Comicana and
all of the other comic shops to which Phil has introduced the membership.

However, we have also been made aware that a number of the
membership would prefer the trip to take them to places such as Camden in
order to shop for items relating to their interests. It is with this in
mind that I propose that since there is no way on Earth the whole group
could visit all these differrent places in one day, there should be two
groups on the shopping trip.

There would be one group, lead by one member of the committee taking
in places such as Camden and any other places which people with an interest
in places like that. The other group could (if Phil is still willing to
come on/help organise the trip after our dreadful phrasing of the previous
email) travel to the traditional route of the shopping trip. The two
parties could then meet up at the end of the day in Pages Bar.

What do you think?

Once again, sorry Phil for any way we might have seemed to disregard
the effort and time you have put into the IFIS shopping trip over the years.

Also apologies for the time it has taken for my reply since the
college network has been down for about a week.

Old Joke, same correspondent.
Excellent idea. Some documentation of what Sci Fi specific places lie beyond Central
London and off the Egham/Waterloo axis would be useful. I'm not aware of any prominent
sci fi places we don't visit with the hideous exception of At The Sign of The Dragon which
we've *NEVER* been to before on a shopping trip and is one of the best Sci Fi Bookshops
for many many miles (Change at Richmond, train to Mortlake, turn right out of the station
and it's on the left a few 100 yards up the road. It's the sort of book shop you can go
into not having visited for 3 years and the owner will remember you !), and the rather
more (forgive me Adam) specialised 10th Planet/Who Shop out in East London. I think
there used to be a sci fi/comic shop in Camden but for the life of me I can't remember the
name.

I'm still up for the trip - got my bonus to spend after all. But it might be the last
time - I am getting much much worse now and walking round London isn't going to be for me
for much longer. So let us know the date then I can book a day off before to rest, Mr
Wren can organise himself to meet us there, and we can hide Mr Dismukes' maps of Waterloo
station long in advance.

Help stamp out and abolish redundancy.

The management has in fact changed recently and whilst we were there
last night Carlos and I spoke to the very pleasant new landlord as to
whether he would mind if we bought along a party of say 20-25 every
thursday. He said he has no problem with us coming if we decide to, and i
think he'd be glad of the business.

This is in no way saying that IFIS will be moving to the BeeHive or
anything, but I thought you would like to know that the Committee are
exploring different possibilities and alternatives to the Barley Mow, who
have been a little mardy to say the least.
