This is a non-negotiable fact. Nick has no choice, we
all want him to be information superhighway man so
much we've given him a committee controlled position
that means he's welcome to come to the committee
meeting and is involved in committee decisions but
doesn't have to stand every year.

Yikes. Sounds almost dictatorial. For what it's worth, I've been more
than happy for the position to be re-elected on a number of occasions,
and I've always stood for re-election, and I've had other candidates
stand against me, and I'd have been a bit sad, but not gutted if someone
else had been voted in, though I honestly believe the technical
difficulties might be more complicated than any other candidate might
have imagined! In the meantime, through election or committee dictate,
I'm delighted to do the job if people are happy for me to do it.

As you all know, I'm spending a reasonable ammount of my free time
designing and writing stuff for a new IFIS website. One of the things
I'm trying to do is make it easier for other people to have an active
role in the site. I've always welcommed submissions from other members,
but apart from a large number of photos, nobody's really been
contributing much. It's difficult to summon much enthusiasm for SERIOUS
content contributions, but hopefully SOME of the new site will be a bit
more contribution-based, even if it's mostly things like polls and
user-reccommended-links and stuff. I'd certainly like to see a few bits
of stuff on the site (other than just photos) that AREN'T done by me.
The site will obviously still need an overall editor, webmaster,
maintainer, sysadmin, techy-bloke, etc, and I'm delighted to continue
with that, and it makes a lot of sense... but I'm hoping that there will
be at least a BIT more involvement from other members on the new site,
even if you can't all turn into SF journalists overnight :-)

I've tended to feel I'm there to take useful notes for the website
(events coming up, that sort of thing) and to offer a historical
perspective like "last time we tried that, such-and-such happenned, so
you might like to consider such-and-such". I'm glad recent committees
have been happy to listen to my advice, but I don't think I've really
been "involved in committee decisions" in any more than an advisory
role, which is probably "the way it should be" anyway.

Can we put you up as the returning officer this year
and see if the SU objects to that ?

You've got my vote on that one. Its a committee
nominated person and Nick falls into that category so
there shouldn't be any objections.

That's something I've more grudgingly accepted every year because it has
somehow become a "tradition" that I've never bothered fighting. If
someone else wants to count hands, they're welcome. I'm no longer
allowed to cast my own vote, and haven't often done so for years anyway,
so I guess I'm one of several almost-ideal unbiassed vote-counters, but
really, honestly, if someone else wants to do it, I don't mind.

I'd also feel happier if there WAS a show of hands of approval on this
one rather than "the committee say so". It adds more value to the
democratic process if the PERSON COUNTING HANDS has been democratically
"approved" too. If this isn't done, it's theoretically possible for a
corrupt committee to nominate a corrupt person to mis-count the votes
and make sure the next corrupt committee gets in. Obviously a succession
of corrupt committees could keep appointing the same corrupt ex-student
counter every year too! ;-)
