IFIS Pub Crawl

Greetings,

Due to the unavailability of certain lecture theatres this Thursday, IFIS
members will be gathering for a pub crawl around Englefield Green instead!
We are planning to gather at Crosslands at 7pm on Thursday 23rd November,
and to follow the proposed route :

7:30 Leave Crosslands
Happy Man
Armstrong Gun
Holly Tree
9:30 Barley Mow (Arrive)

The Bee Hive has been left out due to it's small seating capacity and the
fact that it's quite a distance away from the others. What do people think
about this route?

As per usual fancy dress is encouraged but not compulsory, although a little
green man tells me that Auntie Doris may be making a special appearance this
year (I expect plenty of blackmail pictures to be floating around by the
morning!).

p.s One last thing, can we please be more careful about the 'acquirement' of
certain objects (ashtrays, bar staff, wild animals etc) this year. We don't
want to scar poor SteveD for life ;)

Um the Armstrong gun has less seating capacity than the Beehive. The
Beehive is also nicer.
That being said, I will be rugrat minding my own child to allow the wife a
night off
this Thursday so it doesn't really affect me.
But as Lizz said, you would be cutting the mead out of the route without the
Beehive.

Err, unless things have changed much I would probably reccomend 'The
Beehive' over the 'Armstrong Gun' as the later is the hang out of the local
National Front and there tends to be regular flare ups outside it that end
up in the local courts.

As far as I can tell, Rock soc never had any trouble in the armstrong
gun... but have had trouble at the bee hive and the Holy tree
(genreally for make up and blokes looking too female, can't figure tose
two out)... cant we do the armstrong as well? The whole point of a pub
crawl is to drink at as many pubs as possible, well thats what I thought
the point was.

Thought the NF had moved to the prince of wales or something like that.

Just because in Doctor Who (Curse / Monster of Peladon) the Centauri
Ambasador to the Federation is Green and Penile shaped doesn't necessarily
mean that there aren't other creatures on the planet that are small and
furry. I can't find my copy of HHGTTG at the moment to give you a page # -
new copy of that and Restraunt... for Christmas I think - but the quote is
from the start of episode 3 of the radio series just as the Heart of Gold is
approaching Magrathea and the book is explaining the origin. If you did not
know that - I'm hoping you did and were just being pedantic - will someone
make sure he reads it asap ?

Trying to establish voice contact ... please ________yell into

At this pt I'm going to have to call Chris' bluff on the blue thing as I've
just listened to Fit the third and while the fauna of Alpha Centauri is
described as being small and furry no mention is made of the colour. I do
once again make mention of the lack of my print copy though. A brief cross
reference against the TV series reveals yet again that no description is
made re the colour of the small furry creatures but they are shown to be
black/brown.

While we're on the subject of Fit the Third I should mention that all BBC
released recordings of Fit the Third are cut to remove the sequence from the
pt where they exit the ship to Marvin humming Shine on you Crazy Diamond by
Pink Floyd right up until Marvin is again humming Also Sprach Zarathustra as
they're entering the cave - the recordings jump from exiting the Heart of
Gold to Zaphod leaving Arthur and Marvin behind as the rest go into the
cave.

I'll attempt to drag this thread up from the complete HHGTTG pedantry it's
sinking into by saying "Oi !" BBC ! Hitch Hiker's DVD NOW !"

I have checked all my sources on the colour of the small fuury creatures,
Phil is right. There is no mention of them being blue.
However, the small furry creatures from alpha Centauri that i got from
ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha, (The official H2G2TG fan club) were small blue furry
creatures.
Perhaps they as well as I were partly thinking of super-intelligent shades
of the colour blue.

Ambivalent? Well, yes and no.

My (signed!) print copies of Adams were lost in a flood a few years ago
(before floods became fashionable) - except for So long... , appropriately
enough - but I don't remember anything about them being blue either. Perhaps
in those days even REAL furry creatures from Alpha Centauri kept quiet about
their colour for fear of attack by the NF when they came out of whatever pub
they'd been drinking in.

I can't say if it's reproduced exactly like that in the books - obviously
the Pink Floyd gag doesn't work so well in print. The track in question is
early on in "Shine on you Crazy Diamond parts 1-5" from "Wish you were
here". I can only assume there's an unresolved rights issue concerning one
of the pieces of music used. Also Sprach Zathustra is a classical piece so
I doubt there's any rights remaining on it. DNA is great mates with Dave
Gilmour of the Floyd - to the point of Douglas thought up the title of the
last studio album - The Division Bell - and in return the band let Douglas
play guitar on one of the tracks from Dark Side of the Moon at the
penultimate night of the Earl's Court gigs in 1994. There's also
considerable use made of "Oxygene" by Jean Michel-Jarre during the episode,
and the Hitch Hiker's theme itself is "Journey to the Sorcerer" by the
Eagles from the album "One of these nights" So my bet is that the holding pt
on this is the brief section of "Rock and Roll music" that Marvin 'sings' -
the BBC had to excise a segment of an Elvis track from the recent release of
Revelation of the Daleks over a copyright issue.

Interestingly the segment in question has been present on both of the repeat
runs on R4 that I've heard since I picked the cut up waaaaay back off of the
Don't Panic box set issued circa 86. The cut was still there on the last
tape release and it's on my CD that I bought last year.

I'm not aware of any other cut to the officially issued versions.

I can't believe the army gun is a nf place, I mean, it's always been quite a
student-y pub. Not as much as the Happy man, but last time I looked they were
owned by the same people, so I would be surprised. And I've never had any
trouble there, although if it has changed hands fair enough...

If you go to the Prince of Wales you are guaranteed to come out crawling

Err the Prince of Wales is a locals pub and always has been and they do not
like like students or anyone they think is a student. It is known by the
locals as 'The Struggle' as if they don't like you you'll struggle to get
out without being beaten up.

I survived the experience (Twice) in my fresher days

For what it's worth, I'll shove my two-penn'orth in.

The Armstrong gun, despite it's small size, has shown me and the people I
have been in there with nothing but courtesy and respect (for our money, if
not for us). I have no problem with this pub at all, although I do think
(and this is in general for all the pubs we are planning on visiting, not
just for this one) it would be a good idea to let them know that a
reasonable number of people (in a variety of costumes) are going to descend
upon them for a drink or three.

The Prince of Wales, on the other hand, is an entirely different story. I
have had the misfortune to walk past there a couple of times, and had
varying levels of abuse, ranging from a few choice swear words thrown at me
when I am a safe distance away, to threats and offers of physical violence.
As far as I can make out, this is simply for being a small, student-looking
bloke with glasses. But having said that, when was visiting the Prince of
Wales actually proposed? Certainly, it might be a very nice pub inside, but
from what I've seen and heard outside, I really don't feel like taking the
time to find out.

And a few general points;

As far as I know, the Barley Mow is the only one that has seen IFIS in fancy
dress (the occaision that springs to mind is, of course, Rag Week). Any
other pub is likely to raise a few eyebrows when we all wander in. Reactions
I have had under similar circumstances in the past have ranged from mass
hiliarity (and the landlord bought us all a drink), to sheer open hostility
(and on one notable occasion, the first of us only just got through the door
before being thrown out). I can't say which of the pubs locally are likely
to give which reaction, other (wiser) hands may be able to voice an opinion.
In the meantime, I would (as I mentioned earlier) contact the pubs on the
route (once we settle on one) and let them know. Forewarned is forearmed, as
it is said, although not by me.

We could wander down to Egham, but I really don't think it's worth it. There
are, admittedly, several nice pubs there, but crawling back up the hill
supporting each other as we go just doesn't appeal to me. Take me to the
Barley Mow, which isn't too far away from (my) home, and where the bar staff
will appreciate my efforts to order another drink when I can only just point
at my pint glass. Besides, we'd only get involved in yet another discussion
about which pubs in Egham are suitable.

Oh, and incidentally, this is probably one of the most organised pub crawls
I've ever heard of, much less been on. I remember when (if I can do an old
fogey impression), the only thing that was decided beforehand was what pub
to start in. And, of course, that there was going to be a pub crawl in the
first place.
