rune with a view

Hi guys,

After a huuge committee cat by IFIs and gamesoc last
week, we have decided that the time has come to make a
few changes with regards to rune with a view.
What we want to do is have a RWAV edditorial team, or
rune casters, anyone who wants to be can be on this
team and these people hassle people for articles and
spread the load a little. There will be one person in
charge of the whole process, the RWAV editor, or rune
master, who will have an honourary society position on
both IFIS and gamesoc. This person will be voted for
from the members of the editorial team, by both
committees, and will be in charge of putting RWAV
together and getting it printed. Basically it is a way
to get a few more people involved in the process and
lighten the weight for the RWAV editor. Anyone who is
interested in getting involved should email either me
or Charlotte and we will let you know details of what
to do next.

Sounds like quite a good idea. A few years back when my health was better *
and I had a bit more mobility I'd have loved to have been involved in a venture
like this. _DO_ get some of the old firm with experience in turning out a mag
involved .......

Traditionally the mag has ended up biased in certain directions - but that has
in turn been dictated by what's been submitted - back when I edited it GAMESOC
related articles were a little thin on the ground (and I believe Mr Lyth has had
similar problems in recent years - during his extended period as editor when
generally he's done a pretty good job) (can you say "lost articles" Chris ?)

There will probably still be certain apathy towards submitting articles -
hassling people was *definitely* the right words in my experience :-) After
spending buckets of time writing for courses people are generally not keen on
doing too much for pleasure. Though I think things are a little better than
the bad old days of take what you have and write the rest yourself.

A couple of (few) Qs:

1) Due to the length of time between now and the end of term - which I assume
is sort of nowish - is there time to put such a new structure in place before
the great exodus takes place ?

2) Where - depending on the answer to the above - do any submissions for the
Autumn issue go ?

3) Are we still looking at a 3 issue per year publication schedule ?

4) Presentation - personally I'm rather keen on mags printed on folded paper
instead of a staple job - IE 4 sides of A4 arranged on 2 sides of A3. (Sean -
care to relay the stories of our many hours of fun with the Union copier ? Have
we got any more aesthetically pleasing options than a set of one sided A4
stapled in the corner ?

5) Covers - Is there anyone of an artistic vent in the house ?

* And on that matter - I've not been very well as those who've seen me recently
will say. I'm finding myself very tired and in a lot of pain most nights now
which has put paid to any sort of regular attendance on a Thursday :-(

BTW - I'm having trouble with the article I've been writing on remaking Doctor
Who for the 21st Century (I haven't - as promised - had time to turn my
attention to the X-Men yet). I know how we start, I know how we got there, and
I know how the 1st series ends. I'm just stuck getting from the beginning of
Episode 1 to the end of Episode 5 (when what's been hinted at for the entire
series finally shows up for a finale in Episode 6) Any ideas mail me as
below....

In days of old when RWAV editors were {/bold} we used to use LaTeX to
layout the magazine. Simple really, although you'll probably all now shout
why. Well, it was ye olden days y'see, and the computer science department
didn't have word processors (and they probably still don't come to that) so
we used LaTeX instead.

OK, that's fair enough. I just wondered. It sort of makes sense.

TeX is still out there if you know where to look. While writing some Excel
that sets headers and footers I discovered that that's how they're coded !

There was a bit in New Scientist about it a while ago. Admittedly, it was in
the Feedback section under Amusing Internet Searches, but it was a mention,
nonetheless.

Why do people who know the least know it the loudest?

Quite true. Though certain editors (whistles innocently) have been known to
turn their hand to creative writing in order to actually get the damm thing
out the door on time because apathy has struck the members ! It does get to
the point where you do have to make do with what you've got and my first
thought as an editor was to put in it what I would want to see.

It's all right those days are long behind you now..... I'd hope the union
had a slightly better peice of copying equipment now. I suppose it's not
beyond the grounds of possibility to actually run it off on someone's
printer now ?
And most fine it is too - it still lives in my collection of RWAV back
issues. I'll scan some of ours in and get them on the net.
Hmmmm. The other suggestion I recieved was also along a similarly serious
note...... I've had some inspiration today and am getting somewhere.
I think that's been done rather well elsewhere. For anyone who hasn't seen
it yet Futurama is superb and Bender in particular is a great comic
creation.

gave us the excellent price of 5 pence per double sided A4 page.
What's more they paid for the mistakes. To absolutely top it off,

The only reason we didn't go back was because Chris's services are
