New committee

Alex Whincup is Chairbeing
Giles Allen is Librarian
Adam Cummins is Secretary
Asan Tu is publicity officer
Lorna James is Treasurer

Co-opted
Nick is Information Superhighwayman
Chris T got a position and instantly resigned it.

Publicity Officer is no longer responsible for RWAV after the change made in
1999.
The post of RWAV editor is now honorary and co-opted.
Thus until further notice people -
RWAV editor is Chris Lyth.
(I did speak to the chairbeing last night on this subject and she said that
my position has not been changed.)

erm.... just for the record all those people who Chris
and Adam said were co-opted onto the committee are
not, they have honourary society positions. This means
that the society recognise them for what they are/do
but there aren't any problems with the union as they
are not officially recognised. This also gets around
the problem of people being on the committee for too
long and any other problem that the union can come up
with.

erm... but apart from that, congratulations to the old
committee for ending their term of office with a great
party and congratulations to the new committee good
luck with everything.

excellent work from the committee of 99/2000, did a marvellous job
especially seeing as how the society
has become more active than ever (note : we had *more* students at the AGM
than ex-students!!)

This may be so, but the word co-opted appeared in the minutes which were
handed to me by Izzy herself and also appears in the minutes which I typed
up and sent on to Nick Waterman.

No other people are referred to as being "co-opted"

This is what the difference between "committee" and "executive" used to be,
I think. The SU didn't used to care how many committee members we had, or
what their titles were, as long as the core executive positions were
present. Even then, renaming "Chair" to "President", and various other
variations, used to be fine.

co-opt: v. tr. co-opted, co-opting, co-opts.
1.To elect as a fellow member of a group.
2.To appoint summarily.
3.To take or assume for one's own use;
appropriate: co-opted the criticism by embracing it.
4.To neutralize or win over (an independent minority, for example) through
assimilation into an established group or culture: co-opt rebels by
giving them positions of authority.

I think ours is definitely the "assimilation" variant ;-)
